Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Ontario have most of the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexuals.

Laws Regarding Sexual Activity

All sodomy laws in Canada were repealed in 1969. The age of consent for consensual sodomy is 18 and the age of consent for other sexual acts is 16.

Recognition of Same-Sex Marriage

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Ontario since 2003 when the Court of Appeal for Ontario upheld a lower court ruling that same-sex couples have the right to marry under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Adoption

Same-sex couples can jointly adopt in Ontario.

Discrimination Protection

The Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.[1]

Gender Reassignment

Ontario allows people to change their legal sex without surgery.[2]
