Kerri Buckley was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She is the oldest daughter (of three) of jazz musician Jim Buckley and Janice Wells Rice. Her father was originally from Philadelphia, and was based in the Army in Missouri. He met Janice Wells there, and they married and settled in Kansas City because of the rising jazz scene there, and Count Basie's influence on jazz around the world. Buckley has studied art and writing since she was very young. During her childhood she also played the violin, viola, cello and piano.
She is currently living in Portland, Oregon, and studying the History of Art, English, and printmaking at Portland State University.
