Puteri Indonesia was starting to choose the winner for Miss Universe in 1995, but by 1996, the winner was forced to withdraw from competing at the Miss Universe pageant by Mrs. Tien Suharto, who was the wife of the late second president of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto. Starting in 2004 Puteri Indonesia winner was sent to the Miss Universe 2005 in Thailand by Suharto overthrown. In only 2005 the Foundation of Puteri Indonesia added their runner-up to compete at the Miss World 2005 in China. Between 1992 and 2012 the foundation of Puteri Indonesia had already selected their representatives to the Miss Universe, Miss World (2005), Miss International, Miss Supranational, Miss Grand International (2013), Miss Asia Pacific International (2007), Miss Asia Pacific World (2011-2012) and Miss ASEAN (2006). Since 2013 after losing many franchises, the Puteri Indonesia has only handled their titleholders to the Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Supranational.

Competition

The modern and traditional pageant consist of a final competition held in only one day after doing many social and beauty activities for a month when all contestants are judged in diplomacy interview, evening gown, traditional costume, talent competitions. The top ten semifinalists then compete in interview season and evening gown, the top five finalists are chosen. These finalists then proceed to the interview season part two and traditional Indonesian women dress (kebaya) and last of the contest, the final question portion of the competition. The runners-up and winner are announced at the end. Since 1992, there is no swimsuit portion at the competition.

Every year, thirty four provinces hold a regional competition to choose their delegate for the Puteri Indonesia pageant. Excepted DKI Jakarta province, the local pageant selects five candidates to represent five Jakarta areas.
