The Clow Cards (クロウカード, Kurō Kādo) are fictional magical cards used in the manga and anime series Cardcaptor Sakura. They serve as magical items for the protagonist, Sakura Kinomoto, to use for various means. The deck consists of nineteen cards in the manga, and fifty-three in the anime. The popularity and success of Cardcaptor Sakura led to the creations of several toys of the Clow Cards, including a set of toy cards released by the Nakayoshi magazine to celebrate its sixtieth anniversary.[1]

Concept and Creation

In the story, ten-year old Sakura Kinomoto stumbles upon the Clow Cards within their container, the Clow Book, accidentally unlocking the book's seal and setting the cards free by uttering the name of the Windy Card, summoning its power.[2] It then becomes Sakura's task to locate and capture the spirits of the cards. Only nineteen cards are shown in the manga, while the anime incarnation consists of a full deck of fifty-two, each card containing a spirit that possesses a unique ability. The cards were created by a sorcerer named Clow Reed, and later owned by Sakura upon capturing and sealing them by writing her name on each card.

Upon becoming the rightful owner of the Clow Cards, Sakura learns she must transform them with her own magic into Sakura Cards ("Star Cards" in the English dub of the anime). The process is, at first, very draining for Sakura, but she grows stronger with each card she changes. During the story, both Sakura and Syaoran Li, a descendant of Clow, are able to command the cards, though Sakura becomes the sole user after she becomes the cards' owner. Sakura can command the cards using the Clow Wand, which appears as a small key which transforms into a long winged rod when activated.

A fifty-third card is created by Sakura's magic at the end of the anime, but is unnamed.[3] In the second film, Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card, a fifty-fourth card, The Nothing, is revealed, possessing negative magic that acts as a counterbalance to the positive magic of the other cards. Escaping her confinement, the Nothing steals the other cards but causes parts of Sakura's hometown to be erased from existence. Sakrua successfully seals the card, but a side effect of its capture means she will have to sacrifice her strongest feelings of love, which are aimed at Syaoran Li. However, the nameless card fuses with the Nothing, becoming The Hope, and negating the effects.
