Online Audiovisual Catalogers, Inc., otherwise known as OLAC, was founded in 1980 as a group of library catalogers involved in the cataloging of audiovisual materials, but now support the work of catalogers working on all nonprint resources[2][3][4][5]. OLAC provides a way for catalogers to have a method of communication among themselves as well as with the Library of Congress.[1] The first official meeting of the group happened on July 1, 1980 in New York City with Nancy Olson chairing the group of 30 catalogers.[2]

OLAC's Cataloging Policy Committee (CAPC) represents audiovisual catalogers in national and international cataloging communities to help with the development of cataloging standards and rules. In addition to the seven members of CAPC, there are also liaisons to MARBI, CC:DA, NACOAV Funnel, and OCLC [3][4]

CAPC produces training documents such as best practices for cataloging different types of nonprint material[5] as well as other reports and thought papers.[6]

OLAC Conferences

OLAC hosts a biennial conference for catalogers to come together and discuss topics related to cataloging.[7] Recent conferences include: A/V Cataloging at the Crossroads held in Kansas City, MO. October 23–26, 2014 (joint conference with the Music OCLC Users Group, or MOUG)[8] PostModern Cataloging: It's All AV Now! held in Albuquerque, NM.
