The 2016 American Cup, known as the 2016 AT&T American Cup for sponsorship reasons, is the fortieth edition of the American Cup.[2] The competition will be held on March 5, 2016,[3] at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.[4] It is the first time that the competition has been held in the state of New Jersey,[5][6] and is even the first time a USA Gymnastics national artistic gymnastics event has been held in the state.[7][8]

The event is deemed to mark the start of the preparations for USA Gymnastics for the 2016 Olympic Games.[9] For its seventh year, the competition was held in conjuction with the Nastia Liukin Cup and, for the first time, held in conjuction with the Elite Team Cup; a men's gymnastics competition.[10]

On March 3, 2016, before the competition had even started, it was revealed that the 2017 AT&T American Cup will be held in the Prudential Center again.[11]

Background

On March 4, 2015, USA Gymnastics announced that the 2016 AT&T American Cup had been awarded to the Prudential Center.[12] President of USA Gymnastics, Steve Penny, said that the "Prudential Center was one of our [the] most successful stops on the 2012 Kellogg's Tour of Superstars"; later adding "The New York metropolitan area has a strong gymnastics community, and we look forward to again kicking off the Olympic year in the area".[13][14] Although New Jersey hasn't hosted the event in history, New York City has hosted the event twelve times – the most recent being in 2012; the last Olympic quad.[15]

USA Today reported that organizers originally wanted to return to the Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York – a venue which had been used for every American Cup in Olympic year since 2000.[16] However, a schedulling conflict (a New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons game) forced them to relocate.[17][18]

Both the American Cup and the Pacific Rim Championships are "important events in the calendar", says USA Gymnastics President, Steve Penny.[19]

Venue

Pudcentnewarkjeh

Opened on October 25, 2007,[20] the Prudential Center is located in the central business district of Newark, New Jersey. Designed by HOK Sport, the arena is home to NHL team New Jersey Devils[21] and two NCAA teams; Seton Hall Pirates[22] and NJIT Highlanders.[23] The arena was also home to the Brooklyn Nets (then New Jersey Nets),[24] New York Liberty[25] and the New York Titans.

The arena has held gymnastics related events before—a venue of the 2012 Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions.[26][27][28][29]

The competition will be broadcast on basic cable television. On November 16, 2015, NBCUniversal acquired gymnastics programming from the now-defunct Universal Sports network.[31] It will be televised on NBC Sports.[32]

Sponsors

National telecommunications company, AT&T, was once again the title sponsor of the event; as part of their 2013–16 contract for the event.[33][34] The company, which also provides USA Gymnastics with telecom services, first became the title sponsor of the event for the 2011 event.[35]

Hilton HHonors serves as an additional sponsor to the event. The company is the official hotel partner for Team USA and offers gymnastics event spectators 15% discounts on their stay within the Hilton accommodation portfolio.[36] Additionally, HHonors sponsors several male gymnasts and helps pay for training expenses and their residences at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC).[37]

Kellogg's is the final sponsor. The breakfast cereal company and USA Gymnastics have co-operated together for the 2012 Tour of Gymnastics Supestars.[38]
