Pulse is a monthly news magazine and website on British primary care. It has been distributed without charge to general practitioners in the United Kingdom since 1960. Its stories are regularly picked up by national and regional newspapers.[1] It frequently carries surveys of GP opinions. In 2005 its report that when more than 1,000 GPs were asked about their voting intentions, only one in 10 said they intended to vote Labour was reported prominently by the Daily Telegraph.[2] In 2007 its report that 19% of 309 GPs surveyed said they did not believe abortion should be legal was picked up by the Daily Mail and the Evening Standard.[3]

In 2015, a report into NHS England's personal health budget scheme was picked up by the BBC,[4] Daily Mail[5] and The Guardian[6] among other publications.

It is one of a number of magazines often referred to by GPs as "the comics".[7]

Digital presence

Pulse is the name of the print version of the magazine, while the website is called PulseToday.

The company has recently launched a smartphone app called 'Pulse Toolkit'.[8]

History

In 2000, the title was owned by Miller Freeman UK which went through some restructuring; the part of the business that continued to own Pulse was known as United Business Media (UBM).[9] In February 2012, UBM sold its agriculture and medical portfolios, including Pulse Media Ltd, to the founders of Briefing Media for £10 miliion, with the new business being known as Briefing Media Group.[10]

Pulse was bought by Cogora, an 'integrated media and marketing services' company in November 2013.[11]

Awards

Awards currently held by Pulse include:

  • Magazine of the Year (2014) - PPA Independent Publishers Awards[12]
  • Pulse reporter Alex Matthews-King won 'Scoop of the Year' (2014) British Society of Magazine Editors [13]
  • Digital Innovation of the Year - Pulse Toolkit App (2015) - Medical Journalism Association[14]

Also from Pulse

Pulse launched a recruitment site, Pulse GP Jobs, to help GPs power their next career move.

The site is regularly updated with a wide range of GP vacancies including locum and salaried roles and international opportunities.

In 2015, Pulse became the only GP brand offering job vacancies in both print (Pulse magazine) and online after GP magazine discontinued its print publication in July[15].

A readership survey in 2016 found that 93% of GPs would recommend Pulse GP Jobs to a colleague.
