- Beanstar—this celestial body of lore is known for protecting the Beanbean Kingdom, as well as fueling the chaos brought on by the witch, Cackletta; appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Beldam—the leader of the Shadow Sirens in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
- Belome—a giant carnivorous canine boss that appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Biff Atlas-A weight-lifting portait ghost.
- Big Bob-omb— a gigantic Bob-omb with a crown, moustache, and arms, who is the king of the Bob-ombs. Appears in Super Mario 64, the Mario Party series, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Mario Kart DS.
- Big Boo—A large Boo ghost that appears in Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, and Super Princess Peach.
- Big Bully—a giant Bully in Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart DS.
- Big Lantern Ghost—a large Lantern Ghost that holds Watt hostage in his lantern, in Paper Mario.
- Bigger Boo—a Boo that grows bigger and bigger with each hit, until it explodes; boss of World 2 in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
- Biokinton—a flying cloud boss fought before Tatanga in the Chai Kingdom in Super Mario Land.

- Blessed Sun-The source of all life for the flowers and the trees. However, it is being cut off by Huff N. Puff.
- Blizzaurus—an ice dragon, boss of Gleam Glacier in Super Princess Peach. Its true form is an ice fairy.
- Blooey—a Blooper, one of Luigi's partners during his "journey" in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Blue Goomba—a palette swap of a regular Goomba that pesters Mario in Paper Mario along with his brother Red Goomba.
- Blue Yoshi-a dinosaur/dragon that has the ability to fly. Mario has the ability to ride after feeding it a predetermined number of enemies in the game Super Mario World.
- Bobbery—a retired admiral Bomb-omb who allied with Mario in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Bogmire-A purple portrait ghost. Can create shadow copies of himself.
- Bomberto-A small Bob-omb sailor.
- Bombette—a pink Bob-Omb that allied with Mario in Paper Mario.

- Bootler—Lady Bow's loyal and admiring Boo butler. He is first seen in Paper Mario, but he makes a cameo appearance in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, along with Lady Bow after Mario and co. defeat the Shadow Queen.
- Border Bros.—these two guard the border of the Mushroom Kingdoom and Beanbean Kingdom with several "border hopping" games, in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Boshi-a blue Yoshi with a bad attitude in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Bowser—the main villain and usual final boss of the series; debuted in Super Mario Bros. and has appeared in most of Mario's games since (with a few notable exceptions, such as Super Mario Bros. 2). Also known as King Koopa.
- Bowser Jr.—Bowser's son that appears in Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Superstar Baseball, and New Super Mario Bros..
- Bowser???-A fake looking robot version of Bowser, driven by the Koopa Bros.
- Bowyer—an arrow-flinging boss in the woods of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Box Boy—a treasure chest enemy and palette swap of Chester, Hidon, and Pandorite that appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Brighton—a sun-like character that appears as one of the hosts in Mario Party 6.
- Brown Yoshi-A brown Yoshi.
- Bub-A kid Bob-omb who is spoiled by his rich parents.
- Bub-ulber-A Bub-ulb that lives in Petalburg Town.
- Bubbles—an eccentric Beanbean who founded the Chuckola Cola company, in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
- Bundt (or Raspberry) —a living cake boss in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Burt the Bashful—a giant Burt that is a boss in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
- Buzzar—a vulture boss that resides in Mt. Rugged in Paper Mario.

- Cackletta—the main villainess in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga who attempts to steal Peach's voice.
- Cannon Mole-A Monty Mole that sits in a cannon with Bullet Bills and Bob-ombs inside, who is found in Super Mario Sunshine. The Bob-ombs can be thrown back at him when stunned by water.
- Chan-A Buzzy Beetle the can be found in a dojo in Paper Mario. The weakest of the three fighters in the dojo.
- Chancellor-Prime Minister of the Mushroom Kingdom.
- Charlieton—a chubby wandering salesman in Rogueport, who appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Chauncey-A baby portrait ghost & the first boss in Luigi's Mansion that shrinks Luigi and battles him.
- Cheepskipper—a giant, monstrous Cheep-Cheep, boss of World 3 in New Super Mario Bros..
- Chef Shimi-A Cheep Cheep who cooks on the Excess Express.
- Chef Torte—a cake-baking chef that appears as a boss in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Chef Torte's Apprentice—a boss in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Chet Rippo-a strange bird-like character who raises one of Mario's stats, but lowers the others, in Paper Mario.
- Chief Chilly—a giant Chill Bully, with an icy moustache, that held Wario captive in Super Mario 64 DS; also appears in Mario Kart DS.
- Chill Bully—an ice version of Big Bully that appears as a boss in Super Mario 64.
- Chubby-A mole who lives in the Moo Moo Farm.
- Chuck Quizmo—an inquisitive game show host worm that appears in Paper Mario.
- Chuckleroot—a large, gnarled tree, guarding the Chuckola Cola brewery in Chucklehuck Woods, in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Chuckolator-a living blob of Chuckola Cola with a wooden shield and blobs in the shapes of a sword and a scope, who is the boss of Chucklehuck Woods in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Clawdaddy-A crab found with Froggy in Tetris Attack. Also an enemy in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
- Clawgrip—a crab-like boss that appears in Super Mario Bros. 2.
- Clerk-An employee in Smithy's Factory.
- Cloaker-An enemy found near the end of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Clockwork Soldiers-A trio of portrait ghost soldiers who battle Luigi in Luigi's Mansion.
- Cleftor-A Cleft that is competing in the Glitz Pit.
- Cloud 'N Candy-A boss in Yoshi's Story composed of candy.
- Commander Shroob—the boss of Star Hill in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
- Cork and Cask-A pair of wine makers.
- Cortez—the dead spirit of a pirate who resides on Keelhaul Key with his vast amounts of treasure. Holder of the fifth Crystal Star in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

- Darkly—an eerie young lad from Twilight Town who resides in Rogueport in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Dazzle-A collector of Star Pieces. He will give you badges in return for Star Pieces.
- Ding-A-Ling-A bell on top of Count Down.
- Director-An employee at Smithy's Factory.
- Doctor Topper-A minion of Bowser who is in charge of several obstacles to Exor.
- Dodo—Valentina's dense servant and a boss that appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Doe T.-A Toad who wants to visit the Great Boggly Tree, but needs Mario to defeat the enemies in his way.
- Don Pianta—the Pianta syndicate leader in Rogueport that appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Donkey Kong—the main character from the Donkey Kong arcade series; appears in the Mario Kart series, the Mario Tennis series, the Mario Golf series, the Mario Party series, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Super Mario Strikers.
- Donkey Kong Junior—Donkey Kong's son, from the Donkey Kong arcade series, appears in Super Mario Kart and Mario's Tennis.
- Doopliss—a Duplighost boss that steals Mario's identity and appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. He joined forces with the Shadow Sirens after Vivian joined Mario's team. Until you figure out his name, he appears as "?????"
- Dorrie—a friendly Loch Ness Monster-esque dinosaur that appears in Super Mario 64, New Super Mario Bros., and the Mario Party series.
- Dragohoho-A large dragon found at the top of Hoohoo Mountain being the missing Prince Peasley.
- Dragonzamasu—a seahorse-like boss in the Muda Kingdom in Super Mario Land.
- Dupree-A man who attempts to sweet talk all of the girls that he sees.
- Dyna Mole-One of the siblings lost in the mines.

- Earth Crystal—one of Culex's crystal bodyguards in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Eddie the Mask-A denizen of Rogueport Sewers who is a health nut. Knows about Stylish moves.
- Eely-Mouth—an eel boss that pollutes Noki Bay in Super Mario Sunshine with his bad teeth.
- Eggo-Dil-A flower found with Flying Wiggler.
- Eggplant Man—a strange eggplant-like enemy from Wrecking Crew.
- Elder-The elder of Seaside Town. Kidnapped and impersonated by Yaridovich at one point in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Elder Princess Shroob- Princess Shroob's older sister in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time.
- Elder Puni-An elder Puni who gets kidnapped by Lord Crump.
- Elder Shrooboid—the boss of Star Shrine in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
- Eldstar-One of the seven stars found in Paper Mario. Teaches Mario the ability to use the Focus technique, and the ability to use the Refresh technique.
- Electro Blooper—an electrically-charged Blooper found in Toad Town Tunnels in Paper Mario.
- Ella—one of the two main characters of Mario Golf: Advance Tour.
- Eve-The mother of three Twilight Town boys.
- Exor—the giant sword that crashes into Bowser's Castle in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Eyerok—two giant stone hands, with eyes embedded into their palms, that are a boss in Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart DS.

- Factory Chief—the operator of the Smithy Factory in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Fawful—Cackletta's assistant that appears in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
- Flavio-An entrepreneur who owns many ships.
- The Floating Whirlindas-Two dancing portrait ghosts in Luigi's Mansion.
- FLUDD (or Flash Liquizider Ultra Dousing Device)—a robotic device designed for shooting water that appears in Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Power Tennis.
- Flurrie—a wind spirit who assists Mario in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Foreman Spike - A construction worker who served as Mario's rival in the original Wrecking Crew. He reappears working for Bowser in Wrecking Crew '98. He is considered to be a precursor to Wario. In Japan, he is known as Blackey.
- Francesca—Don Pianta's daughter who fell in love with one of her father's mobsters in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Frankie—one of Don Pianta's mobsters and Francesca's fiance who appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Fred-A denizen of Fahr Outpost.
- Freddy-A denizen of Twilight Town who was turned into a pig by Doopliss.
- Frogfucius—a wise old frog and Mallow's adopted father in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars; named after Confucius.
- Frogog—an anthromorphic frog creature that appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Fryguy—a giant fire boss that appears in Super Mario Bros. 2.
- Fuzzipede-Bait for a fisherman, who eventually battles Mario inside the stomach of a whale in Paper Mario.

- Game Guy—a gambling Shy Guy who challenges players to special mini-games in Mario Party 3.
- GameBoo-A Boo found in the storage room of Luigi's Mansion.
- GameBoo Advance-A Boo found in the wardrobe room of Luigi's Mansion.
- Gardener-A Toad who loves to garden.
- Garf—a member of the Robbo gang in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Garro-A statue maker in Nimbus Land.
- Gaz-A little boy who lives in Rose Town. One of his toys is eventually used by a star spirit as a body.
- General Guy—a white Shy Guy that commandeers a toy tank in Paper Mario and guards Muskular, the fourth Star Spirit.
- General White-A white Bob-omb. Has a large moustache, and at some point Mario has to find him.
- Geno—a mystical alien spirit inhabiting a toy doll that appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. A version of the toy that Geno inhabited appears as a guide in a mini game on Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Ghost T.-A ghost Toad that will kill Mario if he reads his diary on the Excess Express.
- Giant Goomba-The boss of World 4 in New Super Mario Bros.
- Gloomer-A denizen of Twilight Town who gets turned into a pig by Doopliss.
- Gloomtail—Hooktail's brother, one of the dragon siblings. Guards a key in the Palace of Shadow. Appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Gob-A Bob-omb that wants to grow bigger. Creates a snowbob to show how big he wants to become.
- Goldbob-A golden Bob-omb. Very rich, and has a wife and son.
- Goom Goom-A Goomba who gets shipwrecked on Keelhaul Key.
- Gooma-Goombario and Goombaria's grandmother.
- Goomama-Goombario and Goombaria's mother.
- Goomba King—A giant Goomba boss that appears in Paper Mario.
- Goombaria—Goombario's sister in Paper Mario.
- Goombario—a young Goomba that appears in Paper Mario.
- Goombella—a female Goomba that appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Goomboss-A large Goomba that appears in Paper Mario and Mario Kart DS.
- Goomfrey-A Goomba that can help you if you have a problem.
- Goompa-Goombario and Goombaria's grandfather. Mario falls into the wilderness with him, and they have to work together to get back.
- Goompapa-Goombario and Goombaria's father. Good at fixing things.
- Goomther-A Goomba that lives in Rogueport. He is upset because he had been ripped off.
- Gooper Blooper—a giant Blooper boss that appears in Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Power Tennis, and Super Princess Peach.
- Goopy Piranha Plant-A Piranha Plant-like creature that comes out of mud, paint or oil. Can only be defeated by spraying in his mouth while it is opened.
- Gourmet Guy-an extremely overweight Shy Guy that sports a bib and a spoon and fork in Paper Mario.
- Grandma-Princess Peach's Grandmother.
- Grate Guy—a boss and Casino owner in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Great Gossip Trio-A trio of Toads who like to find any gossip that they can find.
- Grifty-A rooftop minstrel who tells stories to Mario.
- Grodus—leader of the X-Nauts. Plans to retrieve the Crystal Stars in order to open the Thousand-Year Door. Appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Grubba—the announcer at the Glitz Pit in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- GumBoo-A Boo found in the hidden room of Luigi's mansion.
- Gus—a member of the Robbo gang that blocks the east side of Rogueport and demands tolls of 10 coins in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
H
- Hamma Jamma-A Hammer Brother, and a competitor in the Glitz Pit. Loves his hammer, and his grandfather is one of the Hammer Brothers from Super Mario Bros.
- Hammer Bro General—the most elite of Bowser's Hammer Brother troop, appears as a mini-boss in Super Princess Peach.
- Hammerhead Brothers—a duo of rocky beings who can weld new hammers for Mario and Luigi in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Harhall—an artist of the Beanbean Kingdom who appears in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Hawkmouth—a bird head that comes alive after picking up a crystal inside Wart's castle and attacks the character in Super Mario Bros. 2.
- Hayzee-Luigi's Dayzee ally who is also an actor/director.
- Heff T.-A gourmet Toad, who enjoys food.
- Henry and Orville - Twin brother portrait ghosts. They will want to play hide and seek, and when they are found, will battle Luigi in a toy car and a toy airplane respectively.
- Herb T.- A middle-aged bar owner in Rogueport Sewers.
- Hermie III—the boss of Gwarhar Lagoon in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Herringway-A novelist in Shiver City. Friend of Mayor Penguin.
- Hinopio-Owns a variety of shops inside of the Barrel Volcano.
- Hoohooros-A creature that can turn into a stone pillar.
- Hookbill the Koopa-A Koopa Troopa transformed into a large Koopa Troopa.
- Hooktail—a large red dragon from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the boss guarding the first Crystal Star. Hates creatures that "start with Cr- and end with -icket".
- Hoo—a giant owl, boss of the Hoo's Woods world of Super Princess Peach.
- Hoot—a sleepy owl that carries Mario to higher areas. (This character does not have a known official name, but is often referred to as Hoot). Appears in Super Mario 64 and Mario Party Advance.
- Huff N. Puff-A cloud overlord. He can be broken up into Tuff Puffs, which he can eat and regain HP if not defeated.

- Iggy Koopa—one of Bowser's Koopalings that appears in Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Il Piantissimo—a Pianta imposter that challenges Mario to races in Super Mario Sunshine. If you view his character model without his helmet, he looks like the Running Man from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This is a tiny easter egg that Nintendo added in, probably known only by the development team.
- Iron Adonis Twins-Twin Iron Clefts, who are competitors in the Glitz Pit. Their bodies are so tough that they have the highest defense of any creature. The older brother wears red shoes, while the younger brother wears green shoes (similar to Mario and Luigi).
- Ishnail—the leader of Rogueport's Robbo gang in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
J
- Jabble-A friendly Jabbi that is friend with Punio.
- Jagger—an armored Koopa Troopa and apprentice of Jinx in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Jarvis-A jar collecting portrait ghost.
- Jellyfish Sisters-Two massagers who run the Relaxation Room in Gwarhar Lagoon. They teach Mario and Luigi Firehand and Thunderhand.
- Jerry-Luigi's Bob-omb ally.
- Jinx—a martial arts expert in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars who challenges Mario to a few fights.
- Jojora-a boss who appeared along side an enemy you got to choose the name for (between four choices) in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Jolene—Grubba's manager who secretly assists Mario in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Jonathan Jones—a shark boss in the sunken ship of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars who befriends Mario after being beaten.
- Jr. Troopa—a baby Koopa stuck in his eggshell who would appear six times and fight Mario and his teammates in Paper Mario. He eventually got a horn and some bat wings. He makes a cameo appearance in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Junior Shrooboid—a giant green Shroob that follows E. Gadd's time machine into the present in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

- Kalmar-One of the Star Spirits who teach Mario how to use the Up & Away star power.
- Kamek-a Magikoopa, the main villain of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island; also appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
- Kammy Koopa—a female Magikoopa that works for Bowser and often accompanies him (Bowser) everywhere he goes. Appears in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Kent C. Koopa—a giant Koopa Troopa that blocks Pleasant Path in Paper Mario.
- King Boo—the head Boo who debuted as the final boss of Luigi's Mansion and appears in Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Kart DS, and Super Princess Peach.

- Knife Guy—a knife-juggling boss (and later friend of Mario) in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Koopa Bros.—A group of Koopa Troopas that work for Bowser. Their names, according to the colors of their shells and ninja gear, are Red, Black, Yellow and Green. They guard the first Star Spirit, Eldstar, in Paper Mario.
- Koopa Kids (or Koopalings) —eight unique children of Bowser that appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, with the exception of Bowser Jr., who appears in Super Mario Sunshine. - Lucky-A large, brown Bob-omb who operates the Happy Lucky Lottery. He gets very upset when people cheat.

- Luigi—Mario's brother, and very often the second player in two player games. - Magnus Von Grapple—a large mechanical suit piloted by Lord Crump. Holder of the second Crystal Star in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Mallow Nimbus—a marshmallow-like character found early in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Mamar-One of the seven Star Spirits, who teaches Mario the Lullaby star power.
- Manager-One of the employees at Smithy's Factory.
- Marching Milde-A large Milde who breaks into smaller Mildes when she is stomped on by Yoshi.
- Marilyn—Beldam and Vivian's sister and the toughest of the Shadow Sirens, judging by her size, in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Her catchprase is "Guh", which is the only word she says all the time, except when the Shadow Sirens were about to introduce themselves to Mario.
- Mario—the main hero of the series, debuting in Donkey Kong as "Jumpman" and first appearing as "Mario" in Mario Bros.
- The Master-The owner of the Toad Town Dojo, and the strongest member of the three members. Has three forms.

- Megasmilax—a giant Piranha plant boss in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Melody Pianissima-A piano-playing portrait ghost. She plays various Mario tunes and loves to play video games.
- Merle-The controller of Starborn Valley. The son of Merlon and father of Merluvlee and Merlow.
- Merlee-A charmer, and the twin sister of Merluvlee. Her charms can help Mario in battle.
- Merlon—a wizard who assists Mario and his partners in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Merlow-A young relative of Merluvlee. He is about Goombario's age, and gives Mario badges in exchange for Star Pieces.
- Merluvlee-A fortune-teller relative of Merlon. She uses her fortune-telling skills to help Mario and company along their quest.
- Minh T.-A gardening Toad in Toad Town. Plants the four Bub-ulb seeds to create the door to Flower Fields.
- MIPS—the armless yellow rabbit that appears in the basement of Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64.

- Monstar-A sparkling ghost-like creature that is actually composed of small star spirits.
- Monstermama—a friendly toadstool creature in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
- Morton Koopa Junior—one of Bowser's Koopalings that appears in Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Mouser—a large mouse boss that appears in Super Mario Bros. 2 and Mario Party Advance.

- Poochy-A dog that helps Yoshi by letting him ride,
- Popple-a thief that appeared frequently in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
- Porter-The station manager in Rogueport. He enjoys trains a great deal.
- Posie-A kind and generous lily, but can become angry very quickly.
- Prince Froggy-A prince that gets turned big by Kamek, who then eats Yoshi and Baby Mario.
- Prince Peasely-the Prince of the Beanbean Kingdom, as seen in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. He is a very vain person, but also brave. His mother is Queen Bean. He is green. Was turned into Dragohoho near the beginning of the game.
- Princess Daisy—Mario's love interest in Super Mario Land, but now rumored to be the main love interest of Luigi. She is friends with Princess Peach and has appeared in many sports and Mario Party games. She is the ruler of the desert kingdom, Sarasaland.
- Princess Peach (or Princess Toadstool) —Mario's main love interest, debuting in Super Mario Bros. and appearing in most of Mario's games since. She is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom.

- Smorg—small, black creatures that band together to create a large monster. They kidnap all the passengers of the Excess Express in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Spooky-A portrait ghost dog. Will bark at you, and cause Mr. Bones to emerge from the ground and throw bones at you. Spooky will go for one of his bones after Mr. Bones is sucked up.
