Rick Ross, (Born William Roberts in Carol City, Florida in 1977), is an American rapper from Carol City, a city north of Miami in Dade County, Florida. He is signed with Slip-N-Slide, which as of 2006, is distributed under Def Jam Records. "Port of Miami", Rick Ross's album was released August 8, 2006. Rick Ross has stated that his inspirations for rapping are Big Daddy Kane, Tupac, Ice Cube, Notorious B.I.G, and Trick Daddy. This is not surprising, as Ross is known as lyrical genius among residents of Dade County in Miami. His powerful use of metaphor and other rhetorical devices has earned him a reputation as one of the greatest rappers to grace the mic. For example, he uses antistrophe (the repetition of words at the end of successive clauses) in the club anthem "Hustlin" in which he says "dont tote no 22's, magnum cost me 22, tatted on the 22, birds go for 22. lil momma super thick she say she 22 she seen them 22s we in room 2-22." [1] Lyrical specialists have blasted him as a fraud for his weaker rhymes, for example, in the same "Hustlin" hit single in which he rhymes "Atlantic" [the ocean] with "Atlantic" [the distribution company]. However, he has since then redeemed himself by releasing the "Hustlin' Remix" featuring Busta Rhymes. In this song, Ross makes several effective, yet subtle, references to cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar, hinting at a possible trafficking network between himself and Escobar's children.
