Emily Hatoyama (鳩山 エミリー, Hatoyama Emirii, February 11, 1955 –), née Takami (高見), is a Japanese essayist and former actress and model. She is the husband of Kunio Hatoyama, the former Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications under Prime Minister Tarō Asō.

Biography

Hatoyama was born to an Australian father, Jimmy Baird, and a Japanese mother. Her father, an Australian sergeant, was forced to remain in Japan, because Australia was barring entry to Japanese people married to Australians at the time. Her sister, Margery, was active as a Toei actress in movies and commercials in the mid-1960s, and now works for Australia–Japan relations.[1]

Hatoyama took her mother's maiden name, Emily Takami (高見エミリー, Takami Emirii), as well as her English name, Emily Jane Baird, when she worked as a cover model for Shōjo Friend by Kodansha during the 1960's. She started working as an actress during the 1970's. She made her debut as a singer in 1972.

Hatoyama was engaged to Kunio Hatoyama at the age of 17 in February 1973. She retired from acting and modeling after the marriage. Hatoyama has three children, Tarō, Hanako, and Jirō.[2]
