The school newspaper is called the Milwaukian. Every year the school holds its annual Living History Day in November.
The school chant is:
- "Mustang born, mustang bred,
- Gonna be a mustang till I'm dead!"
The school's fight song is:
- Onward victorious,
- Fight on Milwaukie High;
- For victory so glorious,
- We'll shout our battle cry.
- RAH! RAH! RAH!
- Hail to our Mustangs bold,
- Their fame will never die;
- So onward Maroon and Gold,
- For the Glory of Milwaukie High.
History
Milwaukie High School began in 1907, on the site of the present City Hall, with four students continuing education beyond grade eight. In 1925, School District #5 built a new high school with three levels. The main building held an auditorium/gymnasium, a cafeteria on the first level, and a boiler room building north of the main building.
Bernard Wakefield, the first principal of MHS, recruited students by riding his bicycle to local elementary schools and distributing yearbooks to encourage graduates to attend Milwaukie over Oregon City or Portland schools.
In 1938, the grandstand and athletic fields were built, and six classrooms added. A grant was used for gymnasium construction, and in 1941 the options building was built for agricultural classes.
In 1947, enrollment was 1,105, and the south wing was built. Science classrooms were remodeled and the industrial arts building addition completed. The gym was enlarged to its current size in 1953.
Jerry Lillie began a 25 year stint as principal in 1953. Enrollment reached 1,550 in 1957, and decreased to 746 when Clackamas High opened in 1958.
The grandstands blew down in the 1962 Columbus Day Storm, and the current grandstands were built. The gym burned down on July 8, 1963, and a new one was built inside the walls of the old one.
The school had major remodeling in 1970-71 to meet fire and safety codes. A new auditorium was built and the original auditorium remodeled into the library. The Commons was added in 1993, and for the first time, students could walk to the gym and remain inside.
As a result of the bond levy, Milwaukie High School has completed renovation of the bottom floor, additional classrooms, new science room, an Administrative/Counseling Annex, practice gymnasium, and the restructure of the main gymnasium.[1]
