History section: appalling mess
The act that brought about partitioning was passed in 1920, but not enacted until 1921. The entity brought into being at that stage was Southern Ireland, not the Free State. If FIFA recognised the FAIFS in 1923, but the FAIFS didn't put out a team until 1926, why does the article state that there was a single team until 1924?
A mess of contradictions. Kevin McE (talk) 18:49, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
VACANT?
Why doesn't it says "Noel King-Caretaker". Who is vacant? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.45.15.82 (talk) 14:33, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
Should the Historical kits section, and other volatile sections, be deleted?
I have just added the new black away kit that was introduced in March 2013. The update was months overdue. The previous away kit (previously marked "now") is no longer now, so I removed that "Now" caption, but that one is now without any caption at all as I do not know when it was introduced. The home kit currently shown as "Now" in the Kit section is not the same as the one in the article Infobox. Which one is current? If the one in the Kit section needs to be changed, then what year should be assigned to the one currently captioned "Now"?
Like so many sections in this article, the Kit section will continue to require maintenance if it is to remain current. It is my view that some volatile sections (those statistics subject to continuing change), like the Kit section, should be deleted as they are not maintained regularly and coherently, so they are misleading.
Some people maintain some tables, other people maintain other sections, some sections are not kept up to date at all, and vandals make edits to statistics that are not noticed since almost all these statistical edits, both valid and malicious, are performed without useful edit summaries, and very often by IP editors, so it is very difficult to assess and cross-check the accuracy and currency of the information. Yesterday, one editor maintained a table but broke the code in the process because he miscoded a rowspan
and other parameters, so the table was displayed with a wrecked appearance. I could not easily identify which of his edits created the problem, so I reverted his four edits and started over.
The following sections and tables in the article are volatile, but they are often not up-to-date and accurate:
- Home record
- Historical kits
- FIFA World Cup record
- FIFA World Cup history
- UEFA European Championship record
- UEFA Euro history
- Other tournaments
- Opponents
- Recent results and forthcoming fixtures
- Current squad
- Recent call-ups
- Most capped players
- Record goalscorers
- Manager records
It is a problem that so many editors update these data because no individual is providing oversight of the accuracy and ensuring that none are overlooked after each match. If anyone wishes to double-check the current data it is a very difficult and tedious chore to do so.
Editing of Current squad
or Recent call-ups
or Most capped players
tables are subject to unknown errors when multiple editors add a value of one to such statistics as caps
or goals scored
without verifying if someone else has already updated the statistic in question. The difficulty of verifying accuracy is compounded by vandal action. If an IP editor adds one to a player's goals scored
record, how is anyone to check if it is vandalism or a valid edit, when no-one ever provides an edit summary or citation?
As for the kits, some historical kits are not even shown. Perhaps this section should be simply deleted because control and verification is so difficult. In addition, the whole Historical kits section is original research, anyway – there are no cited references that can be checked to verify the content. — O'Dea (talk) 10:49, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
Kit colour
This is the right color for the current kit (since 2014, [1] [2]), according to the official website (fai.ie).
This is not. --IM-yb (talk) 19:47, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Not all kits are displayed and some are incorrect in Team image section
I noticed some kits listed are not quite as they were in the years they are suppose to be representative of and in most cases many of the kits are not even displayed. I'm not sure if this is because the template does not allow for the precise colours and design to be listed or if someone has been mistaken. I would change and add to the historical kits section but I do not know how to do it. If someone can direct me on how to change the colours, then I can update this section. Alternatively if someone else with more knowledge on navigating the template prefers to take on the challenge, then by all means go ahead. I found a website that displays historical international soccer kits (See Here) but I am not sure if it violates WP:RS, however it is very impressive and very comprehensive in the information it contains and if we are striving to have a encyclopaedic knowledge then this site is worth viewing. It has all the kits since the beginning of Irish football, including the different emblems, designers, and sponsors that are displayed on the kits (I think it would be a good idea to add these little information details, not only for nostalgia but for accuracy). For 1922-1939 See Here, for 1946-1959 See Here, for 1959-1978 See Here, for 1978-1994 See Here, for 1994-2010 See Here, and finally, for 2010-2016 See Here.
There is also a section related to the kits and history of the Ireland football team (before the FAI IFA split) that may complement this article. For the kits of 1882-1921 See Here.
