Arsenal started their transfer business early, with the signing of Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach, with the undisclosed rumored to be around £30 million being announced on May 25[43]. On June 3, it was announced that Arsenal had activated the release clause of English forward Jamie Vardy, the clause believed to be £20 million[44]. Both Arsenal and Vardy's club Leicester City expected him to make an announcement on June 6 before he flew to France with the England national team for Euro 2016. However, Vardy did not announce what he intended to do and both clubs were made to wait[45].

Pre-season

In February 2016, it was announced that Arsenal would play in the Major League Soccer All-Star Game at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California in addition to a friendly against Mexican side Guadalajara three days later.[51] However, Arsenal later announced that the annual Emirates Cup would be cancelled for the second time in its history due to the extended absence of international players participating in Euro 2016 and "essential pitch reconstruction works" at the Emirates Stadium.[52] Arsenal confirmed their final pre-season fixtures before the Premier League campaign in early-June 2016, as Scandinavian trips against Viking in Stavanger and Premier League rivals Manchester City in Gothenburg completed the line-up.[53] It is the third time in four years that Arsenal and Manchester City will meet in a pre-season fixture outside of England.

UEFA Champions League

Arsenal qualified for the Group Stage of the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League due to finishing second in the 2015–16 Premier League. This means that Arsenal have qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the 19th consecutive year. Following changes to UEFA qualification rules from the previous season, Arsenal, having previously been seeded in pot 1 for the Champions League draw as one of the top 8 ranked teams in UEFA, are instead placed into pot 2 for the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League group stage draw with the remainder of the highest seeded non-champions according to UEFA coefficient.
