Senior IAS officer Rajesh B. Lakhani, who was Agricultural Commissioner and Secretary has been appointed as Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu. He will be responsible for the conduct of the crucial 2016 State Assembly elections. Lakhani is a graduate in electronics and communications from the National Institute of Technology, Raipur, Lakhoni completed his post-graduation in communication and radar engineering at IIT, Delhi. Lakhoni, who was Chennai Corporation commissioner during the previous DMK government, is agriculture and energy secretary. The 1992-batch officer from Madhya Pradesh has held key positions in the government, including district collector of Kanyakumari and Theni between 2003 and 2006. He was also managing director of Metrowater, SIPCOT, Tourism, warehousing corporation, and power finance and infrastructure development corporation limited. He had stints in revenue and land administration departments as well.
