Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories is the sequel to 2003's Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the PlayStation 2. It was announced by Nippon Ichi, the developer of the predecessor, and was released in Japan on February 23, 2006.
Unlike Nippon Ichi's previous games, the game is on DVD-ROM, has an animated opening movie, and includes more famous seiyuu (e.g.- Yukari Tamura, Hikaru Midorikawa, Takehito Koyasu).
The North American version will be released on August 30, 2006.
Story
Fifteen years ago, a powerful Overlord by the name of Zenon appeared on Veldime and cursed it's human population. Since then, all its inhabitants became demons and were to remain that way if the curse was not broken. However, a young man named Adell was the only human unaffected by the curse. Adell, hoping to break the curse, sets out to defeat Zenon and return Veldime to the way it was.
Characters
- Adell (アデル, "Aderu"): The main character of Disgaea 2. As the only human unaffected by the curse of Overlord Zenon, Adell sets out to slay Zenon and free Veldheim of it's curse. Full of courage and determination, Adell protects the weak and crushes evil. He is also very kind and will never break a promise. Unfortunately, Adell cannot handle women and lies.
- Rozalin (ロザリンド, "Rozarindo"): The only daughter of Overlord Zenon. She was accidently summoned by Adell's mother, who was attempting to summon Zenon and break the curse on Veldime. Because of the contract, Rozalin is forced to help Adell find Zenon. Rozalin has a very snobby attitude as she has been spoiled by her father countless times. Rozalin also has no fighting experience as she never left her palace up till now. She tries to get Adell killed in order to break the summoning contract, but she is unable to so. Because Adell is also nice to her, it's hard for her to carry out her plan.
- Etna (エトナ, "Etona"): The devious vassal from the first Disgaea. After a fight with Laharl, Etna leaves the Netherworld and tries to become an Overlord. Now a Demon Lord, Etna is a powerful demon and with the infamous Prinny Squard tagging along, she hopes to find Overlord Zenon and defeat him in order to become the new Overlord. Despite her new outfit, she is still as devious as ever, using Adell and Rozalin in order to get to Zenon. However, she cannot stand being told that she is flat chested.
- Taro (タロー, "Taroo"): Adell's younger brother. Due to Zenon's curse, he has sprouted demon horns on his head. He doesn't have much confidence and he is both passive and clumsy. However, he adores Rozalin, often calling her Princess.
- Hanako (ハナコ, "Hanako"): Adell's younger sister. When Zenon's curse took effect, she gained demon wings. Despite her young age, she has great culinary skill. She appears to be interested in Etna's position as Dark Lord, and wishes to become a sexy Dark Lord when she grows up.
- Tink (ティンク, "Tinku"): Zenon's servant and Rozalin's childhood friend. He was once a humanoid demon, but after an attack on the palace, he was transformed into blue frog. Although he usually acts polite, Tink has another personality. When he is red, he is very lecherous.
- Yukimaru (雪丸, "Yukimaru"): A female ninja who was a part of the Snow Clan. After Zenon wiped out her clan, Yukimaru swore she would one day defeat him and avenge her clan. However, she isn't very confident in herself. When things go wrong, she may try to commit suicide. Yukimaru ends all her sentences with the word zam (de gozaru in the japanese version).
- Axel (アクターレ, "Akutaare): A demon who prides himself over once being popular. Axel was once a famous demon action hero and rock star known by many as the Dark Hero. Unfortunately, he is now a reporter for a travel show called Tripping with Axel. Despite this new role, Axel will occassionally try to add action scenes to the show, despite his director's command. In the North American release, Akutare (or Octalley as some called him) was renamed to Axel.
- Fubuki (斧雪, "Fubuki"): Yukimaru's brother. A mysterious ninja bent on defeating Zenon in order to avenge the Snow Clan.
- Masked Man and Masked Woman (仮面の男 and 仮面の女, "Kamen no Otoko" and "Kamen no Onna"): Zenon's servants. Demons who befriended the people of Veldime, they went off to fight Zenon 15 years ago but lost and had their wills and memories were taken away by him.
- Mom and Dad (ママ and パパ, "Mama" and "Papa"): Adell's parents.
- Zenon (ゼノン, "Zenon"): Feared as the God of All Overlords (魔王神 Maoushin), who single-handedly defeated 99 rival Overlords in a single day. Due to the numerous enemies looking to kill him, Zenon constantly hides himself. A cruel Overlord, Zenon is responsible for the curse on Veldime that turned it's inhabitants into demons. He is also responsible for the destruction of the Snow Clan.
- Laharl (ラハール, "Rahaaru"): The main character of the first Disgaea and current Overlord of his Netherworld. Etna once served under Laharl until a fight forced Etna to leave. Laharl is not pleased to find his vassal leaving him, not to mention taking the Prinny Squad with her. To top it all off, he is very upset over his status being reduced to cameo. He travels to Veldime to bring back Etna and to make himself the main character of Disgaea once again.
- Flonne (フロン, "Furon"): The third main character from the first Disgaea. After the events in Celestia, Flonne became a fallen angel and continued to work under Laharl. Even after Etna leaves, Flonne continues to work under Laharl. She travels to Veldime hoping to end the fight between Laharl and Etna and, like Laharl, wants to be a main character again.
