Emotional hardcore (also known as emo or emocore) is a subgenre of hardcore punk characterized by expressive lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., and was pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. Its sound and meaning was shifted and changed in the early 1990s into a style of genres such as indie rock and pop punk and encapsulated by bands in the early 1990s such as Jawbreaker and Sunny Day Real Estate.
