Sausage Party is an upcoming 2016 American 3D adult computer animated comedy film directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, produced by Megan Ellison and Vernon, and written by Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It stars Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek. It is the first animated film to be rated R since Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters, the first CGI-animated movie to receive the rating, and the first since "Heavy Metal" to not be based on a TV series.

The film follows a sausage who tries to discover his existence and goes on a journey with his friends to escape their fate. Its rough cut premiered on March 14, 2016, and will be released in the United States on August 12.[4] It is a spoof of Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks Animation films.[5]

Synopsis

In a supermarket called Shopwell's, a sausage named Frank lives with various groceries. In a peaceful life, their ultimate goal is to get picked by a customer, but soon they discover the truth about their existence. With the help of their friends, Frank and his hot dog bun girlfriend Brenda embark on an adventure to escape their fate.

Production

Rogen stated that he worked for eight years to get the film made; however, the content worried most film studios and they thusly did not pick it up.[14] Noting that the film came from "an innocent place", Rogen stated "People like to project their emotions on to the things around them – their toys, their cars, their pets,... So we thought: 'What would it be like if our food had feelings?' We very quickly realized that it would be fucked up."[15] Goldberg revealed the project to Indiewire in July 2010 claiming it was a "top secret super project"[6] Initially, Indiewire was skeptical that the project was real and not a hoax on Goldberg's part, but after vetting it did confirm that it was in the works.[6] Later in November 2010, Hill told MTV News that he was working on a R-rated 3D-animated film.[16] The rating was later confirmed as R.[17]

On September 24, 2013, it was announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures would partner and co-finance the film, along with Point Grey Pictures.[18] Greg Tiernan of Thomas & Friends fame, and Conrad Vernon served as directors, and Megan Ellison, Rogen, Goldberg and Vernon served as producers.[19] Sony Pictures Imageworks handles part of the feature animation internationally, and Nitrogen Studios Canada for the rest of the CG animation, pre-production and post-production in Vancouver and Sony will release the film worldwide in 2016.[20]

Casting was announced in January 2014, with Rogen, Hill, James Franco and Kristen Wiig as the leads in the film, while the other cast includes Edward Norton, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz and Nick Kroll.[8] On April 9, 2014, Salma Hayek joined to lend her voice to the film as Teresa the Taco.[10] On May 29, it was announced that the film would be released on June 3, 2016,[21] but in early 2016, the release date was revised to August 12, 2016. It was also announced that Paul Rudd, Danny McBride and Anders Holm would lend their voices to the film.[9]

Release

A rough-cut of the film was shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 14, 2016.[4] The film will release in the United States on August 12, 2016. Internationally, the film's release date is September 2, 2016.

Controversy

A red-band trailer for the film with adult content, violence and profanity accidentally played before a showing of the PG-rated Finding Dory at a Concord, California multiplex in mid-June 2016 which forgot to switch out an adult-audience trailer roll for one meant for G and PG-rated films when adding additional screens to carry Finding Dory to meet audience demand. The incident occurred only once and the theater apologized, with Rogen tweeting that the story "made his day".[22]

Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 100% based on 7 reviews and an average rating of 6.5/10.[23]
