Richey McCourt is a Dublin-based songwriter, who is signed to Stockholm-based publishing company, DH MGMT.[1] (formerly ONE MGMT) McCourt has worked with a variety of artists and producers including Will Young, Pixie Lott, Matt Cardle, Rebecca Ferguson and Isaac Waddington. He writes predominantly with Swedish-based writer and producer Nick Jarl, whose previous successes include writing songs for Westlife, Loreen, Jedward's Eurovision 2012 song "Waterline" and more. McCourt and Jarl's song "Losing the Love" is featured in the forthcoming Disney movie Tini: El gran cambio de Violetta starring Martina Stoessel and on her debut album. The video for "Losing The Love" went live on Vevo on May 6, 2016 [2] with the album entering the German album charts at Number 6 on the same day.[3]
McCourt's background has been in performing, as a regular on Irish television shows including The Late Late Show, The Voice of Ireland, The Saturday Night Show, The Rose of Tralee[4] and Saturday Night With Miriam[5] performing as a musician. He has played with a wide range of artists including Olly Murs,[6] Sugarland,[7] Shane Filan,[8] Rebecca Ferguson, Matt Cardle,[9] Joe McElderry, Katie Waissel, Markus Feehily,[10] and Kian Egan.[11]
McCourt and Jarl's song "I Don't Need a Lover" which closes the Will Young album, 85% Proof, was described by The Guardian as "This one is a piano ballad dominated by a vocal performance of silvery regret and loss. It’s a reminder of how good Young can be (and how much he has influenced Sam Smith)."[12] Young himself notes that "I Don't Need a Lover" is the only song on 85% Proof which he did not write, saying "This one song did stand out, and it's really lovely."[13]
In June 2015, McCourt was interviewed as part of the IrishTimes.com series "How Music Works",[14] where he discussed his approach to songwriting, and his background in performance.
