Yandere Simulator (possible working title, YandereDev has stated he's thinking of changing the name) is a stealth action video game in development and to be published by YandereDev. Debug builds of the game are made available via its official website.[1][2] The game's premise centers upon a jealous schoolgirl, Ayano Aishi, nicknamed Yandere-chan after the Japanese term "yandere", who has decided to eliminate anyone she believes is monopolizing her crush's attention.[3]
Gameplay
Players control Ayano Aishi (also known as "Yandere-chan"), a psychotic Japanese schoolgirl and serial killer who has developed a crush on a fellow student currently named Taro Yamada, nicknamed "Senpai".[4] Over the course of 10 weeks, 10 rival students develop crushes on Senpai, and Yandere-chan must prevent them from confessing their love to him. This can be accomplished by the player via several methods, such as murder, blackmail, or social sabotage. Yandere-chan receives aid from an information broker calling herself "Info-chan", who can provide her with services such as weapons, plans, or other favors. Yandere-chan must also avoid being witnessed while performing criminal activities, or suffer penalties ranging from a loss in reputation that makes it harder for other students to trust her to an immediate game over. Murdering students will result in penalties to School Atmosphere, which alters NPC behavior to become more suspicious. Yandere-chan can join school clubs and attend classes to receive additional abilities, such as easy access to weapons, or increased ability to avoid suspicion.
Main characters
Info-chan
In the current game, not much is known about Info-chan so far, except that she has a reputation for selling dark secrets and panty shots, and wants Osana to suffer. It can be inferred that she is a mischievous character, and given her willingness to incite murder, voyeurism, gossip, and bullying, and her apparent indifference to the effects of her actions on others, she most likely lacks moral standards and is possibly sociopathic and/or sadistic. She has the personality of "Evil", which means, as an NPC, she encourages crime. In both introductions, Info-chan is shown to be uncaring towards other people. Info-chan does not feel guilt or remorse when harming others for her own personal gain. Info-chan is also extremely intelligent and resourceful. In the first intro, Info-chan seems outwardly confident and very curious, as finding out secrets about other students is a hobby of hers, not just a job. She is very ambitious, as she wants her newspaper to become popular badly enough that she goes to the trouble of asking Yandere-chan to stir up turmoil. Info-chan is dedicated to her work and apparently poured her heart and soul into running the school newspaper. Her desire that Yandere-chan not kill off the entire school was not out of sympathy or humanity but due to the fact that the newspaper would die if no one was alive to read it.
In the second intro, violence is a bigger staple of her character. She specifically wants Osana to get hurt in some way, but the reason for it is unknown. She is willing to set Yandere-chan, an obsessed sociopath, against a rival who simply has a crush on Senpai.
Yandere-chan
Ayano Aishi, better known as Yandere-chan, is the protagonist of Yandere Simulator. She's a Japanese high school girl who felt no emotion until she met an upperclassman, whom she calls "Senpai". She will do anything to get him, even if it means hurting someone. Her obsession with Senpai may not be a crush, but a desire to feel emotions. Even after declaring this, however, in the very first intro, it was seen that Yandere-chan was actually influenced by Info-chan for eliminating rivals. Her birthday is April 1, and she's stated to be 17 years old (Though the game states that all characters are 18 or older, YandereDev said that "Senpai is 18, and one year older than Yandere-chan").[5][6] Yandere-chan has fair skin and black hair in a ponytail. She seems to have lots of energy, since when running, she can run faster than any other student. In her default uniform, she is seen wearing a traditional Japanese school girl outfit: white and navy blue uniform shirt with a red mini scarf, a navy blue skirt, and black stockings with black shoes. The length of her stocking is longer than any other student. She is 165 centimeters tall, and weighs 43.5 kilograms.[7] Yandere-chan's intelligence will depend on how the player chooses to play. If they do not attend class, then they will not get any study points, meaning Yandere-chan cannot eliminate the rivals in ways like matchmaking, poisoning, faking their suicide, etc. Currently, there are 14 mods for Yandere-chan in the game.
Senpai
Taro Yamada (placeholder name, English meaning is "John Doe"), better known as Senpai, is the love of the player. In future builds, players will have the option to choose a female Senpai. Just like Yandere-chan, Senpai has greyish black hair and eyes, and is an average boy who gets average grades.[8] Senpai is a loner type and he likes to spend his time surrounded by nature.[9]
Rivals
All ten rivals are still unconfirmed characters, baring Osana Najimi and Oka Ruto. Currently, all elimination methods are tested by the test rival Kokona Haruka, so there is no way to win the game.
Osana Najimi will be the first of ten rivals that will compete for Senpai's affections, and will be used as a tutorial at the beginning of the game, and is a student at Akademi High. She will be implemented within several months (as of January 11, 2016) according to Druelbozo.
Development
YandereDev is an independent game developer in California, and has worked at a video game company for three years. In April 2014, YandereDev pitched the idea for Yandere Simulator on Some Awful Site For Asshats and Retards, where it got a lot of positive reception, so he decided to start developing it. It's a stealth game that borrows elements from the Hitman series, but also contains "school simulation" gameplay elements and other elements that make it quite different from Hitman.[10]
Development for Yandere Simulator began in 2014, with YandereDev releasing test builds of the game for debugging purposes.[11] He has periodically released updates that add elements to the game such as the ability to poison, electrocute, and drown rivals, stealing other female students' uniforms to change into after committing a murder, befriending other schoolgirls, small mini games, a town the player can bike around in and other elements.[12][13]
