Big Brother 18 (U.S.) is the 18th season of the American reality television series Big Brother. The season premiered on June 22, 2016 on CBS with a two-hour season premiere and will end with a 90-minute season finale on September 21, 2016. Julie Chen returned as host.[1][2][3]

Season development

On September 24, 2014, CBS announced that it had renewed Big Brother for its 17th and 18th editions for broadcast in summer 2015 and 2016, respectively. The series would continue to be hosted by Julie Chen.[4]

Format

The format has changed slightly from previous seasons. The contestants, referred to as "houseguests," are sequestered in the Big Brother House with no contact to or from the outside world. Each week, the houseguests take part in several compulsory challenges that determine who will win food, luxuries and power in the house. At the start of each week, the houseguests compete in the Head of Household (HoH) competition. The winner of the HoH competition will select two houseguests to be nominated for eviction. Each week, six houseguests are selected to compete in the Power of Veto (PoV) competition: the reigning HoH, their two nominees and three houseguests selected by random draw. The winner of the PoV competition wins the right to either revoke the nomination of one of the nominated houseguests or leave as is; if the veto winner uses this power, the HoH must immediately nominate another houseguest for eviction. The PoV winner is also immune from being named as the replacement nominee. This season's Have-not room features bumper cars. On eviction night, all houseguests vote to evict one of the two nominees, with the exception of the nominees and the Head of Household, who is only allowed to vote in the event of a tie, in which case they must do so publicly. This compulsory vote is conducted in the privacy of the Diary Room. Unlike most other versions of Big Brother, the houseguests may openly and freely discuss the nomination and eviction process. The nominee with the majority of votes will be evicted from the house on the weekly live broadcast, exiting to an adjacent studio to be interviewed by Chen, after which the cycle begins again. Houseguests may voluntarily leave the house at any time and those who break the rules may be expelled from the house. The last nine evicted houseguests will form the Big Brother jury and vote for the winner during the season finale. The jury members will be sequestered in a separate house and will not be allowed to watch the show except for competitions and ceremonies that include all of the remaining houseguests; the jury members will not be shown any Diary Room interviews or any footage that may include strategy or details regarding nominations.

Twists

Teams

Similar to the cliques in Big Brother 11, the houseguests will initially compete in teams. The teams were selected by school-yard pick prior to the first competition. When a HouseGuest wins Head of Household, their entire team earns immunity from nominations. Frank, Michelle, Paulie and Bridgette formed Team Category 4. Da'Vonne, Paul, Zakiyah and Jozea formed Team Big Sister. James, Natalie, Victor and Bronte formed Team Unicorn. Nicole, Corey, Tiffany and Glenn formed Team Freakazoids.

BB Roadkill

Following the nomination ceremony, the houseguests compete in the BB Roadkill competition, with the winner earning the power to privately nominate a third HouseGuest for eviction. For each Roadkill competition, an RV is placed in the backyard; one at a time, houseguests enter the RV to complete the task. Following the competition, the HouseGuests are privately informed if they won or lost the challenge, with no obligation to ever reveal their result; the winner then names a third nominee in the Diary Room. Unlike the Head of Household, the Roadkill winner could nominate a member of his or her own team, provided their intended nominee is not immune. If the Roadkill nominee is saved by the Power of Veto, the Roadkill winner privately names a replacement nominee. The power to privately name a third nominee and replacement was previously seen in Big Brother 15 with the MVP, who earned the power through public vote.

Battle Back

Instead of permanent eviction, the first five evicted houseguests received a chance to return to the game. The first two evictees face off in a duel, with the winner advancing to face the next evicted houseguest, while the loser will be permanently eliminated. Following four duels, the remaining evictee will re-enter the house. All four duels will air in a special episode on July 22.[5]

Summary

On Day 1, the 12 HouseGuests entered the House. They were then told about the first twist-- four HouseGuests would join them and would be forming teams of four. James, Nicole, Frank and Da'Vonne-- who had each played the game before-- then entered the House again. Paulie revealed his secret of being Big Brother 16 runner-up Cody Calafiore's brother while Tiffany decided to hold out about her sister, Big Brother 17 houseguest Vanessa Rousso, even though Da'Vonne-- not surprisingly, considering she caught to the Twin Twist from the previous season in which Julia Nolan and her twin sister, Liz Nolan, originally competed as one twin before both earned the right to compete together-- and Michelle caught on. Some of the new Houseguests were set on sticking together and running the Vets out of the house while the Vets knew they needed some of the newbies on their side to stand any chance. Later on, the HouseGuests went outside to form their teams. Frank, Michelle, Paulie and Bridgette formed team Category 4; Da'Vonne, Paul, Zakiyah and Jozea formed team Big Sister; James, Natalie, Victor and Bronte formed team Unicorn; and Nicole, Corey, Tiffany and Glenn formed team Freakazoids. The HouseGuests were then told about a second twist-- the four teams will compete in four competitions. The winning team of each competition will be safe and exempt from the next one. The last team remaining will then have to compete against each other as individuals. The loser of the final competition will be evicted from the House. The remaining three will then decide amongst themselves which one of them will be the first Head of Household. The HouseGuests then went outside for the Ride the Rocket competition. Each team must climb onto their rocket and stay on for as long as possible. The team who gets eliminated first will land in "Notburg" and be Have-Nots for the week. The second team to fall will go to "Mystery Land" and receive a mystery punishment. The third team will land in "Cash City" and be given $10,000 to split. The last team will land in "Safeville," which will guarantee the team's safety for the next two evictions. Big Sister became Have-Nots, Category 4 went to Mystery Land and Team Freakazoids received $10,000. Team Unicorn received immunity for two evictions. The three remaining teams battled in the first round of the Hit the Road competition. Three HouseGuests had to hold on to three ropes to suspend a beam. The other HouseGuest would dig in the sand for a puzzle piece, place it on their beam and switch out with a teammate. If a piece falls, they must start over. The first team to build their fifteen-piece sandcastle and hit their buzzer will win round one. Category 4 won the competition. Team Freakazoids and Big Sister then went head-to-head to build a sandcastle puzzle. The first team to complete the puzzle will win round two. Big Sister won the competition. Team Freakzoids then went head-to-head in the final round of the Hit the Road competition. Each HouseGuest will stand on a tilting island with the letters "SOS." The must climb up their palm tree, grab a coconut, and place it on one of the empty spaces of the SOS. The last HouseGuest to finish their SOS and grab the flag will be evicted from the House. On Day 2, Glenn lost and was evicted immediately. Immediately after Glenn's eviction, the remaining members of Team Freakazoids decided Nicole should be Head of Household, much to the dismay of the other newbies, who were so comfortable with their numbers, they had no problem telling the Veterans after this week everyone will be after them. Da'Vonne informed Nicole on this and she decided to make a move to target Jozea, the person she felt was the most vocal in the Veteran revolt. She felt like she needed to nominate Paulie as a pawn in order to get Jozea out. On Day 7, Nicole followed Da'Vonne's advice and nominated Jozea and Paulie for eviction, with Jozea as the target. In order to gain the numbers, the Vets pulled in Zakiyah, Michelle, Corey and Tiffany to form the "8 Pack" alliance. Big Brother revealed a brand new competition to the HouseGuests called the "BB Roadkill" competition, which will allow the winner to secretly name a third nominee. The HouseGuests then went outside to the Big Brother RV for the Take It Off Roadkill competition, where the HouseGuests competed individually to strip off their clothes while holding down three buttons while driving the RV. If a HouseGuest releases one button, their timer will go 30 times faster; release two buttons and their timer will go 60 times faster; release all three and their timer will go 120 times faster. The HouseGuest that hits their buzzer with the fastest time will win the competition. Frank was the winner. Natalie, Bridgette and Bronte formed the "Spy Girls" alliance. However, the alliance was made in full view of Tiffany, who informed the 8 Pack of this alliance. As a punishment for landing in "MysteryLand" on the Day 1 competition, team Category 4 had to wear pixelated costumes for the entire week. At the Roadkill Ceremony, Frank secretly nominated Paul for eviction. On Day 10, Nicole, Jozea, Paulie and Paul, as well as Corey and Da'Vonne, with Michelle as the host, barked in the Dizzy Dog Power of Veto competition. In this competition, HouseGuests must swirl around on their stand 15 times to earn 45 seconds. They can then use this time to begin stacking dog treats on top of their dog house. If they don't get back on their stand and resume spinning before their 45 seconds are up, they will be eliminated. The first HouseGuest to stack all forty treats on top of their dog house and hit their button will win the Power of Veto. Paul was the winner and, on Day 12, took himself off the block, forcing Frank to secretly name Bridgette as the replacement nominee, putting Da'Vonne's plan to backdoor Jozea into motion. On Day 16, Jozea was evicted by a 7-4-0 vote, with Bronte, Natalie, Paul and Victor voting to evict Paulie. Julie then informed Jozea that he will join Glenn in the "Battle Back." In the coming days, Glenn and Jozea will face off in a duel. The winner will continue in the game and await the next competitor and the loser will be eliminated for good. After five HouseGuests have been evicted, the last HouseGuest remaining will earn a second shot in the game. Following Jozea's eviction, the HouseGuests challenged in the Berry Balanced Head of Household competition. Each team must send one player across one of two beams. They must grab a berry and return it to their station. If a HouseGuest falls, they will be eliminated. The first team to collect 40 berries and retrieve the final blue berry will win the competition. The HouseGuest who retrieves the blue berry will be the new Head of Household. Category 4 won the competition and Paulie became the new Head of Household. Due to collecting the least amount of berries, Da'Vonne, Paul and Zakiyah became Have-Nots for the week. On Day 17, Paulie nominated Bronte and Paul for eviction. The HouseGuests then competed in the 18 Dollas Roadkill competition. HouseGuests competed individually. HouseGuests had to look at a set of ten items of various prices. They must put tags on six items that add up to exactly $18. The HouseGuest who selects the six items and hits their buzzer in the fastest time will win the competition and earn the power to secretly nominate a third HouseGuest for eviction. Victor won the competition and, on Day 17, secretly nominated Tiffany for eviction. On Day 18, Paulie, Bronte, Paul and Tiffany, alongside Da'Vonne and Zakiyah, with Corey hosting, analyzed in the Toe-zarks Power of Veto competition. In this competition, HouseGuests had twelve minutes to collect letters one at a time. Each letter has a point value. They then had to take their letters back to their board and spell the best word possible. The HouseGuest who has a correctly spelled word with the highest point value will win the Power of Veto. Paulie won the Power of Veto. On Day 20, Paulie took Paul off the block and named Victor as the replacement nominee, putting the plan to backdoor Victor into motion. On Day 23, Victor was evicted by a 9-1-0 vote, with Paul voting to evict Bronte. Following Victor's eviction, the HouseGuests served in the Kiss My Ace Head of Household competition. In this competition, one HouseGuest from each team had to serve a ball into their court, hoping to land it in the highest numbered slot possible. The HouseGuest with the lowest score in each round will be eliminated. The HouseGuests will then rotate and serve again. If there is a tie, all tied HouseGuests will be eliminated, unless all four players are tied, in which case they serve again. The last HouseGuest remaining will be the new Head of Household. Bridgette was the winner. For being the first team eliminated from the Head of Household competition, Corey, Nicole and Tiffany became Have-Nots for the week. On Day 24, Bridgette nominated Paul and Tiffany for eviction, with Tiffany as the target. The HouseGuests later participated in the Horn Star Roadkill competition. HouseGuests competed individually. In this competition, they were required to listen to a set of horns. They then had to listen to a sequence of eight horn honks. They then had to repeat the sequence by pressing the correct horns. If they are incorrect, they must try again. The HouseGuest who repeats the sequence in the fastest time will win the competition and earn the power to nominate a third HouseGuest for eviction. Frank was the winner for a second time and, on Day 24, secretly nominated Bronte for eviction, putting the plan to backdoor Tiffany in motion. On Day 25, Bridgette, Bronte, Paul and Tiffany, joined by Natalie and Paulie, with Da'Vonne as host, mixed it up in the Vetolicious Power of Veto competition. In this competition, HouseGuests looked at a sequence of colored ingredients. They then were asked to place a certain ingredient in the pot. If a HouseGuest is incorrect, they will be eliminated. The last HouseGuest standing will win the Power of Veto. Bridgette was the winner and, on Day 27, decided not to use the Power of Veto, hoping to still have the votes needed to put Frank's plan to backdoor Tiffany in motion. However, on Day 30, thanks to Da'Vonne flipping the vote to screw over Frank, Bronte was evicted by a 5-4-0 vote, with Frank, James, Natalie and Paulie voting to evict Tiffany. Following Bronte's eviction, the HouseGuests were quizzed in the Euro Trippin' Head of Household competition. In this competition, HouseGuests were asked questions based on photos of the first three evicted HouseGuests on a European trip. An incorrect answer resulted in elimination. The last HouseGuest standing will be the new Head of Household. Paulie was the winner. For being the first team eliminated from the Head of Household competition, James and Natalie became Have-Nots for the week. On Day 31, Paulie nominated Natalie and Tiffany for eviction. Later, the HouseGuests freshened up in the Gasping for Air Roadkill competition. HouseGuests must hang air fresheners on their colored pipes. If an air freshener hits the ground, it is out of play. The HouseGuest who hangs the most air fresheners in the shortest amount of time will win the competition and earn the power to nominate a third HouseGuest for eviction. Tiffany was the winner and, on Day 31, secretly nominated Corey for eviction. On Day 32, Paulie, Corey, Tiffany and Natalie, along with two other HouseGuests, competed in the Power of Veto competition. Corey was the winner. On Day 34, Corey took himself off the block and Tiffany secretly nominated Da'Vonne as the replacement nominee.

Notes

  • ^Note 1 :   As reward for Victor being the last HouseGuest standing in the opening competition, Team Unicorn earned immunity from the first two evictions.
  • ^Note 2 : After Team Unicorn won immunity from the first competition, the members of the other three teams competed in a three-round competition, with the HouseGuest who lost all three rounds being evicted. The first two rounds were competed in teams; Category 4 and Big Sister won, earning safety. The remaining team, Freakazoids, competed in the third round individually. Glenn lost the competition and was evicted. The team then had to choose one of their remaining teammates to become the first Head of Household; they chose Nicole.
  • ^Note 3 :   During the team phase of the game, the Head of Household's teammates earned immunity from eviction for the week.
  • ^Note 4 : The winner of the Roadkill competition earned the power to nominate one HouseGuest for eviction. This nomination is made privately and the HouseGuest is not obligated to reveal their identity. If the veto is used to save the Roadkill-nominated HouseGuest, the Roadkill winner also privately nominates the replacement. Their nominations are shown in bold.
