On Friday, 22 July 2016, a shooting was reported in the Olympia shopping mall in the Moosach district of Munich, Germany.[6][7] A police spokesman called the incident a "shooting spree".[4] German media have cited a police spokesperson who stated several people have been killed and more injured.[8] Munich police quoted eyewitnesses who reportedly saw three attackers carrying guns.[6][2] The shooting began at a McDonald's restaurant near the shopping mall. The police confirmed an "acute terror threat".[2]
Background

The security forces have been on alert prior to the shooting after a knife attack which occurred earlier in the week was perpetrated by a teenage migrant who professed allegiance to the Islamic State.[6]
Events
There was an urgent warning to avoid Karlsplatz/Stachus in Munich, where German media were reporting multiple shootings. Drivers were warned not to take up any passengers. Later, the police denied that there was a crime scene at Karlsplatz, though a mass panic was reported from there. People in Munich were warned to stay at home and avoid crowds and public squares.[9] U-Bahn and bus services in Munich were stopped.[10]
Police forces from the greater area, including Nuremberg, were deployed. Munich main station was evacuated and all trains in and out Munich were stopped. According to Bayerischer Rundfunk there is a further crime scene at Isartorplatz in front of a large cinema, approximately 1,000 metres from Karlsplatz/Stachus. All doctors were called to the hospitals, as there was a mass-casualty incident declared by the authorities.[1]Template:Source needs translation German police stated on Twitter that they do not know where the attackers are.[11]Template:Source needs translation
A manhunt was initiated by the police, and is currently underway. It is still unclear who the perpetrators were, and whether they had any ties with ISIS or other terrorist organisations. Until further notice given, the police urged the inhabitants of Munich not to leave their homes.
Regional and Inter-city trains ceased their service to and from the region of the shooting.
