Marilyn Raphael is a professor and former Chair of the Department of Geography at the University of California, Los Angeles with interests are in climate variability and change particularly in the high latitude Southern Hemisphere[1].

Early life and education

Marilyn Raphael was born and grew up in Trinidad and Tobago. She received her Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Geography from McMaster University (Ontario Canada) in 1984[2]. Her Master of Arts and PhD (1990) were focused on Physical Geography/ Climatology at The Ohio State[1].

Career and impact

Raphael is a Professor with research interests in Southern Hemisphere middle and high latitude climate dynamics, Antarctic sea ice - (large-scale) atmosphere interactions and global climate change and variability[1]. Dr. Raphael teaches classes in Tropical climatology, Boundary Layer Climates and Climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic at UCLA[1].

She is a former (2010 – 2013) Chair of the Department of Geography at UCLA, co-Chair of the SCAR/CliC expert group Antarctic Sea ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) with Steve Ackley (2009 – present)[3]. She is also co-Chair of the World Climate Research Programme's Polar Climate Predictability Initiative (PCPI) with Dr. Cecilia Bitz. (2015 – present).

She has served on several US National Academy of Science Committees that focus on the Antarctic: Future Science Opportunities for Antarctica[4] and Antarctic Sea Ice Variability in the Southern Climate-Ocean System[5].

She also served on the US National Science Foundation’s Office Advisory Committee of the Office of Polar Programs from 2004 - 2008[6].

Awards and honours
