Semi-protection

I have semi-protected the article due to ongoing vandalism. Semi-protection prevents edits from unregistered users (IP addresses), as well as edits from any account that is not autoconfirmed (is at least four days old and has ten or more edits to Wikipedia) or confirmed. IP and new users can request edits to a semi-protected page by proposing them on its talk page, using the {{Edit semi-protected}} template if necessary to gain attention. New users may also request the confirmed user right by visiting Requests for permissions. SilkTork ✔Tea time 11:24, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can this article be un-semi-protected? Article has been semi-protected for quite awhile from what I can tell (2011). I would like to make an addition to the Literature section to include the novella titled "Whitby".— Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.46.113.120 (talkcontribs) 08:04, 27 March 2013‎
Did you by any chance see the section above about semi protection? Creating an account and becoming autoconfirmed will let you edit. If for some reason you don't want to create an account you could post it to the talk page and ask another editor to add it to the article. While this isn't exactly what you were asking for I hope this helps. Thanks Fraggle81 (talk) 17:49, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like articles being protected from editing, however, thist article - perhaps because of Whitby's association with Dracula - attracts a fair bit of harmful edits. Protection had been previously placed, then lifted, and had to be placed again. It is unfortunate, but some articles are best left protected. In addition, this is a Good Article, and is in decent shape. As Fraggle says, people can register an account, or make an edit suggestion on this page. Change the "Culture, Media and Sport" section to say "For over four decades the town has hosted the Whitby Folk Week, and since 1993 the bi-annual Whitby Gothic Weekend for members of the Goth subculture." Change is indicated in bold, note it includes the comma after "Folk Week". Also, there are references to the NYMR service using "steam engines", this should be "steam and heritage diesel locomotives".

GA check

I am working my way through the Good articles listed at Places; having a quick look to see if they still meet the Good article criteria. I have landed on this article. After I've had a quick look, I'll leave a note here indicating if I have concerns or not.

In general, I see the process as this: 1) Give the article a quick look to see if there are obvious issues: maintenance tags, unsourced sections, excessive media, etc, resolving any minor issues as I do so; 2) If I have concerns, open a GAR to see how serious those concerns are, resolving them myself if they are not serious; 3) If during the GAR I feel that there is significant work to be done (more than I can or am willing to do myself), I will put the GAR on hold and notify the main contributors.

My aim and intention is to keep the article listed - I would rather the article was improved and kept listed than the article is delisted. Where a delisting seems likely due to the amount or nature of work needed being greater than I am able to do alone, and the main contributors are unavailable or unable for whatever reason to do the work, then appropriate WikiProjects will be notified at least seven days before a delisting would take place. Green tickY Article is good. There is an issue regarding the Weather box, if it meets WP:NOTSTAT and WP:EMBED, though that discussion is still ongoing. SilkTork ✔Tea time 17:35, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gunner Robert Watmore

Memorial to Gunner Robert Watmore found on West Cliff, Whitby.

I'm unsure of the notability of this, but I've uploaded a picture of the memorial for Gunner Robert Watmore which is on West Cliff. Thought it could maybe me used in the history section with a sentence about it (can't see anything about WWII and Whitby at the mo). -LÒÓkingYourBest(Talk|Edits) 19:38, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

May be we need to note something on the war in the history section as it is thin on more recent history. Would probably be time to think about a History of Whitby article to expand on and give more details on the history of the town. Keith D (talk) 21:13, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good idea. I was looking for History of Scarborough for a template, but guess History of York is a good (if somewhat large) place to start. -LÒÓkingYourBest(Talk|Edits) 16:30, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Whitby. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

Change the linked to resource from reference number 154 to link to [1]

This contains live data that backs up this fact.

The current reference link is linking to a dead page.
