Problems with viewing maps on Wikipedia
Hello, The Italian wikipedia article on the city of Zara in Croatia has a map showing the location of the city: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zara#/media/File:Croatia_location_map.svg But the map as I'm able to view it merely shows Croatia, without indicating the location of Zara. This happens to me frequently when trying to view a map which is included in a Wikipedia article about a particular location. I imagine that I need to configure things differently, but have no idea how, and I'll appreciate whatever advice you can offer. - @Jro571: I see the city as a red dot in the infobox at it:Zara. Do you see it there? It isn't supposed to show when you only view the map. The red dot is a separate image it:File:Red pog.svg displayed on top of the map in the infobox. The same map it:File:Croatia location map.svg is used by many articles about different places in Croatia. If you want to see the red dot in a larger map than normal in the infobox then your only option is to use your browsers zoom function on the infobox. Most browsers use Ctrl++ for larger, Ctrl+- for smaller, Ctrl+0 for normal. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:16, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
Problem getting image caption to appear
I uploaded a new photo for the CoreLogic article and wanted to include a descriptive caption, and used the code [[File:CoreLogic_HQ.png|200px|right|CoreLogic's Irvine CA headquarters]] but the caption only appears with a mouseover. - Fixed at Wikidata in [5]. You cannot control the text displayed on the link in the article, except by using the

parameter but that also controls the infobox heading. (Technically the Wikidata entry could be abused to give the wanted effect but don't try that). Some templates give a warning about unknown parameters when previewing but {{Infobox medical condition}} is not one of them. Just like on George V or Elizabeth II honorifics do not belong in the top of the infobox under the "name" parameter as that is not their name. That list is like most lists on Wikipedia where the people listed there should have an article about themselves before being listed there. I cannot find an article called "Wayne Ray Chavis" or "WayneRayCha". You may be notable enough for an article according to Wikipedia's policies. I don't know. Should the word "versus" be capitalized in titles?
I wonder whether the word versus should be capitalized in titles. These two video games – belonging to the same series – have inconsistent titles: Sherlock Holmes versus Arsène Lupin and Sherlock Holmes Versus Jack the Ripper. Ongoing semi-protection of the Race and intelligence talk page
Wikipedia:Protection Policy#Protection by namespace states that "Talk pages . . . are only semi-protected for a limited duration in the most severe cases of vandalism." I have checked the race and intelligence talk page several times over the past year or two, and it has been protected continuously. I would like to know where to request it be unprotected, as, bar an exceptional coincidence, it is in clear violation of Wikipedia:Protection policy. 110.33.170.108 (talk) 10:53, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- The way to appeal the protection of the talk page is to start with the protecting admin and ask them to remove the protection. In this case that would be Doug Weller. You need to explain why you believe protection is no longer is required. The protection was added because of disruptive editing by socks of Mikemikev. - You can ask at WP:RFPP (Request For Partial Protection, which includes asking for protection reduction) or you could create an account and become autoconfirmed (make 10 edits with the account and have it exist for 4 days) after which you would be able to edit semi protected pages like that admin's talk page. File on Commons with the same name as a file on Wikipedia
I accidentally uploaded an image to Commons using the same name as an existing image on Wikipedia. Now, if I try to use the image I uploaded to commons on Wikipedia, it will show the image on Wikipedia that is known under that name. Is there any way to get around this, or do I need to get the file on Commons to be renamed? ~Mable (chat) 13:35, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Possible to edit text of a bar chart in Wikimedia commons?
I would like to use https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Global_plug-in_annual_sales_2011-2015.png but overwrite the language to use it in a different language Wikipedia. I have no graphics skills or special graphics software but I understand that graphics are normally created in layers. So is there some text layer I can edit and save the whole thing as a different language version of the bar chart?
Or if that is not possible is there a way I can contact the creator (their user page is a red link which says the page has been deleted) or can I ask for a graphics expert to upload it to Wikimedia commons as layers? Chidgk1 (talk) 14:03, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- That likely isn't needed, Chidgk1. The Commons link you provide includes a link to the original source document, a Google Sheets found here, and since the license used is the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license, as mentioned you are allowed to remix the work to suit your needs, as long as you apply the same license to your new product. So from a practical standpoint, all you need to do is open the source Google Sheet, save a copy of it so you can edit that copy, and make the language translations via editing the actual data in the sheet. This should automatically make the changes to the graph attached in the sheet since the graph is just reading the data you send it. Then, upload a picture of the new graph to Wikimedia Commons, and license and attribute the original work appropriately. RegistryKey(RegEdit) 14:50, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

If you see {{vte}} it produces a link with hover text "View this template". How can we produce that simple hovertext which when on hovering displays a tooltip. {{abbr}} produces a underline too which I don't want. I know it can be done by <span>

Indenting issues in IPv4
Can someone have a look at IPv4? There was an edit two weeks ago that introduced indenting issues, but I can't figure it out. Putting the {{aligned table

I have read all the instructions etc. But I am still at loss as to understand how to enter an article and particularly how to enter a footnote. Again I have read all instructions which do not make sense. I have written the article and have all references. I do not know how to make the web page work. - Basically, you just visit the URL for the article you'd like to create (that doesn't exist yet) and click "Create". Have you tried the Article Wizard yet?
- And take a look at Help:Footnotes for more information on how footnotes work. The basic syntax is this:

How to refresh WikiProject page
Hello!! I recently put together the Wikipedia:WikiProject WikiChallenge African Schools, a competition that we're running from January 2017. The box style presentation makes things very easy to read - BUT the information takes ages to pull into another page. In French Wikipedia, there is a button for refreshing the page and pulling new info into the boxes. Here is an example at bottom right - "rafraichir la page": https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Wiki_Loves_Women . Is there one for English Wikipedia? if so, which template I can use. Writing partners
Dear editors: I recently moved a draft to mainspace, and it's now Mark Swift. However, Swift appears to do almost all of his writing in partnership with another writer, Damian Shannon. If an article were to be made about Shannon, the only difference would be in the "Early life" section and maybe a "Personal" section if one were to be added. Is it sensible to make one article, "Mark Swift and Damian Shannon", with redirects from the individual names? Or, in the case of biographical articles, does this just mess up the wikidata or cause other problems?—Anne Delong (talk) 11:11, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

how to use a map within a wikipedia article

- JohaAu If you want to mark an area of a specific size and shape, follow the instructions of the user above. If you want to display one or many dots (or some other kind of symbol, cf. the aircraft icon in the airport articles), that mark the locations where the language is spoken, use Template:Location map. Granted, both of these are very technical tasks. Getting a template edit to show up
I made a small edit to this template, but I can't seem to get it to show up on the pages the template appears on. I've seen something about purging, and needing to do it on a page in a transclusion, or something like that; I don't really know what I'm doing (as the more clued up among you may be able to tell) and I don't want to press buttons, especially on a template like this, for fear of buggering up a whole bunch of stuff. - What you've heard about is WP:Purge, and it's not something you do to the template itself. What it basically does is instructs the server to recreate the page from its source code. There is a gadget which adds a purge link to the tops of pages, or you could add
?action=purge

Writing and article
I have read all the instructions etc. But I am still at loss as to understand how to enter an article and particularly how to enter a footnote. Again I have read all instructions which do not make sense. I have written the article and have all references. I do not know how to make the web page work. I have registered
I have had some responses but they were in a form not easily understood ans seem to involve chat rooms - I don't do chat rooms - except I suppose this is one. Is there an instruction manual, particularly about how to set up connecting footnotes in English, and not just hieroglyphics? Hey there, folks, I've never run up against this dilemma before, but obviously I did something that I can't understand or find a solution to undo. In attempting to create an article for the 1952 album "Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin" somehow when I finally was ready to "save the page" I was shocked to find that the entire article was now under the title "Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook", which previously existed as its own article for that album. When I attempted to go back and "undo" what I had done, it did not show any of the work as a large plus number contribution in my history or on the article's history page. Can someone take a look and see what could have gone wrong? I've created pages before, but never run up against something like this. Is there a way to simply revert back to the original article for "Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook"and yet create a new article "Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin" at the same time? - I have reverted your edit to Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook, and used your new content to create the new article Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin, and have provided attribution to your edit. When creating a new page you need to do the creation and save in there, rather than saving in an edit to the old article. - A further problem is that you uploaded the image File:PetersonPlaysGershwin.jpg to Commons, which would only be acceptable if the image was free of copyright. I believe that what you should have done is load it to English Wikipedia under a WP:NFCC rationale in a similar manner to File:Oscarpgershwinsongbook.jpg. - The error message says "Check |url= value (help)", and the word "help" is in blue to indicate that it is a wikilink, in this case to Help:CS1 errors#bad url. I need help fixing my error
This was the first time I was doing a move myself. I was trying to move Draft:New Perry Hotel to mainspace, but I moved it to Wikipedia:New Perry Hotel. I put in a SD on that article and tried the move again, to New Perry Hotel, but it only created a redirect to Wikipedia:New Perry Hotel. How can this be fixed? Imagine my surprise when I look at the difference page here and find all sorts of edits I didn't make, including edits regarding the substance of the article, which is on a subject with which I'm not even familiar. A subsequent editor promptly reverted some of these changes, and quite rightly. My concern is, how did this happen? Has my account been hacked? Or has there been a technical glitch? These changes are too specific for me to think I did them in error. Also, this hasn't happened on any of my other edits, as far as I can tell. I don't mean to be melodramatic about it, but I'm deeply perturbed to have someone making poor edits and giving the impression that they're mine. Any ideas what happened here? - @Tigercompanion25:Appears to me that you accidentally edited an old version of the page, as you didn't so much introduce as reintroduce some issues. A bit of digging revealed the version you edited to likely have been the one by FrescoBot in January 2011. this diff shows no change beyond the fixes you meant to implement, and that's what I get when I compare your edit to FrescoBot's edit, so...you probably checked or otherwise ended up at an old version of the page before clicking edit.
