Incoming link count
Please does anyone know of a simple tool to count incoming links to a page, ideally limited to links from the article namespace? I can page through Special:WhatLinksHere and count manually, but this gets tedious for articles with many thousands of incoming links. I've searched through tools.wmflabs.org and found a tool that works for disambiguation pages only, but I'm hoping for something similar that includes ordinary articles. Thanks, Certes (talk) 00:32, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- See Help:What links here#Number of links. There has been a request to integrate a function similar to this into Mediawiki since 2005 Phab:T6394. Nanonic (talk) 00:53, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the speedy response, Nanonic. Dispenser's tool looks like exactly what I was seeking. Certes (talk) 00:56, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
Refdesk permalink
Is there a way to create a permalink to a section (i.e. "question") on a reference desk? --2606:A000:4C0C:E200:1821:CD59:E35A:CB68 (talk) 00:51, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- You would begin to do this in the same way as any permalink. Access the page and then click 'Permanent Link' and once done, click the section heading you want and copy the URL including the oldid. For example, the permalink for this page when you edited it would be https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&oldid=736660361 (or Special:Permalink/736660361) and the permalink for the section at that point would be https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&oldid=736660361#Refdesk_permalink (or Special:Permalink/736660361#Refdesk_permalink). As with any permalink, this links to that particular version of the page. Any subsequent edits are not included. Nanonic (talk) 01:05, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, Nanonic! Works fine, I especially like the 2nd option, making it an internal link. 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:1821:CD59:E35A:CB68 (talk) 01:32, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Is there a way I can permanently disable the mobile version of Wikipedia and always show the desktop version instead? I use Wikipedia on a mobile device but find the desktop version much better. Thanks!AnAwesomeArticleEditor (talk) 01:24, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- @AnAwesomeArticleEditor: At the bottom of every mobile page should be a button to switch over the desktop mode. The preference should be saved as a cookie and will stick until you clear those. You can also click on this link in mobile view and it will do the same thing. --Majora (talk) 01:52, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Maybe it should be saved as a cookie, but in my experience (Android, Chrome) it isn't. I have failed to find a way to achieve what AnAwesomeArticleEditor wants. Maproom (talk) 07:33, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
List of infobox template subset
I need a relatively easy way to produce a list of infobox templates that support the individual coordinates-related parameters. For this purpose it would probably be sufficient to list templates that support one of |latitude=
, |latd=
, or |lat_d=
(or 3 separate lists). To be clear, I'm talking about templates, not template transclusions. ―Mandruss ☎ 02:43, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
@Mandruss:Latd search, Lat_d search, the latitude one is a little bit trickier. Give me a few minutes while I read up on cirrus searches. --Majora (talk) 03:09, 29 August 2016 (UTC)- @Mandruss: So I did figure out a better way to do this but the wikimarkup is having a fit with the renaming so they are just going to have to be full links. There is one catch. I can't figure out how to filter out the subpages. So the /doc, /sandbox, ect for various templates are in there too. If anyone else can figure that out and let both of us know that would be great. --Majora (talk) 03:35, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

- Ensure that you have an account and you are logged in. If you don't have an account, create one
- Learn the basics of editing with the Wikipedia:Tutorial
- Make sure the subject is notable enough to warrant a stand-alone article
- Gather reliable sources to cite in the article
- Make sure no article on the subject exists under a different title by typing the subject into the search box and clicking 'Search'
- Type the page name in the search box and click 'Go'
- Click 'Create this page'
- Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout guidelines
- Be aware that Wikipedia deletes thousands of new articles for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are at extra risk of deletion, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones.
- I recommend not creating an article about yourself, however, as you have a conflict of interest. Also, please sign your post by typing four tildes (~~~~) or clicking the signature button above the edit box which looks like this: . Do not sign in articles. Pppery (talk) 12:12, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Mitchell Hamline School of Law page
There are problems with the Wikipedia page for Mitchell Hamline School of Law. The page has received very little editorial attention since the school was created on Dec. 10 2015, after the combination of William Mitchell College of Law and Hamline School of Law. I believe merging the William Mitchell page and the Hamline Law page is appropriate as a way to show that the two schools are now a part of Mitchell Hamline School of Law. Some Wikipedia editors argue that's recentism, but I disagree. Key point: the William Mitchell page contains incorrect information, since the school no longer exists. It also mixes in current information about Mitchell Hamline School of Law, such as the web address. Some of the same issues are on the Hamline Wikipedia page as well. Meanwhile the Mitchell Hamline School of Law page doesn't include the most basic information about the school, such as its physical address. Full disclosure: I'm an employee of Mitchell Hamline School of Law who has requested something be done with this page in the past on the William Mitchell and Mitchell Hamline talk pages, but nothing has been done. Posttim (talk) 16:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- William Mitchell was a much bigger school. It may be appropriate to rename it to Mitchell Hamline School while retaining a separate article about former Hamline School. Ruslik_Zero 17:46, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
COI
I noticed that a recent edit at World Aquarium was made by user, World Aquarium. The edits weren't particularly ad-like, though he introduced a bunch of grammatical errors which I tried to correct. I'm not sure of all the steps to take to notify the user of COI; could someone here do this please? (and maybe instruction so I can take care of it myself in the future). I think I'll go back and put a refimprove tag on it, and maybe search for some references when I have time for a proper google search. Thanks, Leschnei (talk) 18:40, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Warned. TimothyJosephWood 19:06, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- You can use {{Uw-coi}} to give a templated warning to someone. There's also {{Welcome-COI}} if it's among their first few edits. If the problems persist, you can raise the issue at WP:UAA (for user name violations), WP:AIV (for spamming), WP:COIN (for issues directly related to COI), or WP:ANI (for other behavioral issues). Generally, I find most of these noticeboards unnecessary, as people are usually reasonable when approached politely. If they're not doing anything disruptive, I sometimes just ignore it, but I keep an eye on the account to make sure it doesn't start spamming or whitewashing. - Hello, it looks as if your edit here successfully removed the information. It may be a temporary anomaly which means it still appears on the mobile site. Eagleash (talk) 19:44, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Bossladymira:, you may also want to read WP:COI, as it is apparent that you have some sort of conflict of interest in regarding the material/article that you are editing. Reagrds. —MeowMoon (talk) 20:24, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- The conflict of interest here appears to be a minor issue, and probably less important than the presumption of privacy for living subjects, especially for persons who are relatively unknown, as detailed at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. The material in question was unsourced, and therefore subject to removal. However, if more caution is wanted, changes can be requested by using the {{request edit}} template on the article's talk page. —Coconutporkpie (talk) 22:13, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Clarification needed about WP:PIPELINK
In the see also section of Gandhi (film) there is a link to Jinnah (film), but links as Jinnah when I changed it to Jinnah (film) another user reverted and pointed to a WP:PIPELINK, I read it and found nothing wrong with my edit. If I understand correctly, since Jinnah and Jinnah (film) are distinct topics, so the current linking is misleading. I would like some assistance on this.--NadirAli نادر علی (talk) 23:16, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
- What MarnetteD did was correct. It should not appear to the reader as "Jinnah (film)" because that is not the name of the film. The name is simply "Jinnah". The reader likely doesn't care that we have other articles with a similar title to "Jinnah". And the text after the link, "Jinnah a 1998 film", makes it clear that the link is taking them to the article about the film. †Dismas†|(talk) 23:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

- (edit conflict)x2 As noted on the OPs talk page the italicization of the film title makes it a distinct topic from the article about the person. Referencing errors on Jay Kim
Reference help requested. I corrected a reference on this page of Jay Kim - by deleting the incorrect phrase. The page had referenced an LA Times article that said that the subject (Jay Kim) was the first Asian immigrant to be elected to Congress. That is not correct, as Dalip Singh Saund met this threshold. How to check history...and more
Hello, Recently I have been studying philosophers most notably Socrates.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socrates
Upon returning to the Wikipedia "Socrates" Web page I have noticed a grevious amount of changes that were made within the last 72 hours.
How can I view the previously in edited version?
Additionally, in my search I attempted to remedy one of the omitted links. The afformentioned link was in (Greek?) "oeuvre" used to describe the complete body of work completed by an artist throughout a career.[2] In an attempt to remedy this I noticed that the site has been set to prevent vandalism. It is in my humble opinion that this site may have been vandalized.
Your urgent attention is greatly appreciated and thank you for all of the wonderful works and contributions. The works within these pages are an invaluable rescource to all.

Override NOGALLERY tag
bsd. i edit a lot of logos, which are not free, and therefore have the NOGALLERY tag in all categories specifically for them. In order to identify images that csn be improved, galleries are very useful, so i would like to know if there is a way of manually overriding the nogallery tag, without removing it. thank you. --Ben Stone 03:11, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
- Overriding that would defeat the purpose. Logos can only legally be used for very specific reasons. 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:4BF:6AED:D301:8167 (talk) 03:21, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
- Let me clarify: by override i mean just for editing purposes, without ever changing the actual page, exclusively for editing purposes. For example: appending #IgnoreNoGallery to the end of the url, would override said tag, without changing the page, and violating copyright.--Ben Stone 04:09, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
- The policy is here: WP:Logos, which would supersede anything I say, of course; but it is my understanding that even having copyrighted logos on non-article space (talk pages, user drafts, etc.) is not allowed (without valid justification). The only purpose would be to quickly identify images for improvement.--Ben Stone 04:44, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

As a cautionary note please remember it is Wikipedia's page about 'you' built from hopefully reliable sources, not 'your' page. general user friendliness of wikipedia
I am 63 years old, suffering from a deteriorating muscle condition, partly blind, living in a remote village in a developing country with irregular electricity supply, and FEMALE.
this does not diminish my capacity to help make entries as far ranging as those for Lady Chatterley's Lover and ASIO ACCURATE. the page for which my monograph is the only reference cited with a descriptive citation is still riddled with errors of FACT.
I am prompted to write because I heard on Australian radio this morning about the rather disproportionate number in the percentages of contributing editors who are not men. This is 2016 and I thought that by now the idea was rather that knowledge should be no longer the province of only half the world's population.
If you could be so kind (sic) as to postulate the existence of a person with a very sharp mind who could very easily ( well, at great physical sacrifice) fix a large number of small and greater errors - THE person who ought to have been consulted about one particular page as it happens, a person who without being a Neanderthal having begun using email in 1992, is nevertheless unacquainted with Facebook or any other form of social media, does not go online shopping except under torture, but nevertheless cannot see why SHE should be excluded on ANY of these grounds from helping if we are sincerely talking about accurate factual knowledge, then there needs to be a more user friendly way of getting in contact with people for those who have never done a live chat in their lives or used Facebook or Twitter etc.
if this is the wrong page for these observations, could someone please forward them to were they should be and perhaps think of a person they know in a wheelchair who still keeps trying to contribute. Not everyone is a white male speaking English and under 40 years of age - I say this without bitterness in the least - but again, merely as an observation of FACT
in the 21st Century though I do realize in FACT knowledge is still a club belonging nearly exclusively to the male of the species, if THEORIETICALLY at least, Wikipedia would like to avoid having such a finger pointed at it, it could possibly adopt a more user friendly attitude and postulate the existence of someone as I have described myself to be, and someone could perhaps contact me. - It may be that the OP does not realise that ALL Wikipedia contributors/editors/administrators are unpaid volunteers who spontaneously offer their time and (intellectual) labour, and that Wikipedia/the Wikimedia Foundation does not select them in any way. Why these volunteers are disproportionally male (and also white Western English speakers – like myself) is a matter of sociological interest, but not something correctable without a corresponding shift in global sociology.
- The OP mentions several facts about herself as if, perhaps, they would be discriminated against by Wikipedia, but none of them would be known to anyone else if the OP becomes a Wikipedia contributor, with or without an account (I myself have been contributing regularly for over a decade without an account) unless the OP chooses to disclose them. Bajrang Dal Page
Dear Sir,
Please remove the page on Bajrang dal or make is fully editable, the page owner is not displaying the correct info. The page states bajrang dal as an Militant Organisation, but it is not an militant organisation its a nationlistic orgnisation working todars devlopment of Indian youth. If it is militant organisation then govt of india have to take the decision not somebody who thinks than its a militant organisation. Its a shame on crore of its followers by calling a peacefull organisation an militant organisation, i immedetely call for bannig of this page and other link related to bajrang dal as it portray bajrang dal in a bad light, also for your info it is not a banned org and a fully legal organisation, Pleas remove the word militant and remove the page and the moderator from wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sk234 (talk • contribs) 16:02, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

- Hello Andre Didier Serre. You seem to be referring to Google's Knowledge Graph. Using its own algorithms, Google assembles and displays information as it sees fit. Much of that information may come from Wikipedia but we have no control or direct influence over that process. Our goal is to write excellent encyclopedia articles, and Google or Bing or Yahoo or Baidu or Facebook or anyone else are free to reuse that content in any way, as long as they provide attribution. Because you have a conflict of interest, you should not be editing the Wikipedia article about your company. Instead, post suggestions for improvement along with links to reliable sources verifying your suggested content on the article's talk page. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:58, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

Haringey 6th Form Centre change oage title
Hi,
I work at Haringey Sixth Form College. We have recently changed our name from Haringey Sixth Form Centre to Haringey Sixth Form College. I have been able to make the changes in the body of the page, but I cannot change the title. I have tried moving the page, but am not an administrator so it is not allowing me to do so.

I wish to add the name of a community group to the page for Llangynidr, in Wales and a link to the group's websiteJessopp (talk) 10:53, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
- If you can find a reliable (such as a newspaper: not any kind of blog or social media) independent (not the group's own website, or anything based on a press release or interview) source that confirms that the group exists and is in Llangynidr, then you can add it to the article, with a citation to the source (see Referencing for beginners). You should not include a link: see External links for why not. The purpose of Wikipedia is presenting neutral, reliably sourced, information about topics, not promoting your community group, no matter how virtuous it may be. --ColinFine (talk) 16:53, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
Article submission
What is the status of Draft:Loss development factor? I submitted weeks ago and it hasn't been declined or accepted. Someone commented that I should improve the citations but I don't think that's grounds for declining (their concern seemed to be about citation formatting and adding in-line citations, not not notability/verifiability). B, 0-9, A, N, C, D...

- (ec) Even more interesting order in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting:
- 0–9, A, C, D, E, G, H, K, L, M, B, P, F, R, I, S, T, O, U, Δ, Τ, Ψ, Ω
- Notice Greek letters, and doubled T, one of which is Latin 'tee', the other one a Greek 'tau'. --CiaPan (talk) 14:26, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Guy Macon and Arjayay: Things appear to get worse... Today I tried to refresh the cached page for Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting – and nothing changed. However I noticed the C item with a single page Comparison of survey software went somewhat forward, and it landed approximately in the M, F, K sequence. So I made a null-edit to the page to see, if it would change its position in a category. And — surprise, surprise! — the C item disappeared from the category at all, though the page still contains an error in Ref-s... So the problem is much bigger than just ordering... --CiaPan (talk) 08:47, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

If you click on the link "contact page" on the left of an article page, you can reach "Article subjects", the link for those who like you are the subject of articles. Thia takes you to a specialist team who have the tools to assist you. We hope that Wikipedia's article about you contains content from reliable sources. Is this not correct? Duplicate article
I've not run across this situation before; two articles were created on the same subject independently of one another. There was no copy-and paste involved (at least on a cursory overview). The first article, Institute of Physical Education Sukhothai Stadium, was last edited in May 2014. The second article, Sukhothai Institute of Physical Education Stadium, was created this past June. Clearly, they need to be merged, and there is no overlap of histories, so it should be pretty simple. Yet all the instructions and procedures for merging pages and histories (such as {{histmerge}}) assume that there was a copy-paste involved, which is not the case here. How should I proceed? — Gorthian (talk) 22:31, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

Math formulas not showing on an iPhone display but seem fine on regular computer browser
I noticed today that some of the math notation displays on a regular browser, but does not appear on the iPhone using Safari browser.
It seems like the ones with the ":" tag are not displaying.
Or perhaps it is the lines starting with a "<math>" tag?
Particularly, I am looking at the 4-gradient page.
Can anyone else verify this?
Is the problem Wikipedia, or the Safari browser, or iPhone Safari, or just my phone?

- The usual way to do it is with a template which does the calculation for you.
{{Death date and age|2016|8|29|1920|2|4|df=y}}
renders as 29 August 2016 (aged 96); the detail of the parameters is at {{Death date and age}}. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:21, 1 September 2016 (UTC) - We have five million articles and they often do things differently. You didn't name an article and this is the only edit by your current IP address but David and I both tracked you down to this edit. The article did use {{Death date and age}} to compute the age. It just had a wrong birth year as input after possible vandalism in [3] was only partially fixed. The article simultaneously had the parameters
birth_date = {{Birth date|1920|2|4|df=y}}
anddeath_date = {{Death date and age|2016|8|29|1916|2|4|df=y}}
in {{Infobox person}}. That's an inconsistency which could have been avoided if the template was recoded to get the death date in a separate parameter and reuse the given birth date parameter to compute the age. It wouldn't avoid an error if one of the dates was wrong but it would make internally consistent claims. There are however other complications with that method. Secondly, as her mother, you have a very clear conflict of interest, so should not be editing her page at all, but suggesting changes, supported by reliable sources at Talk:CiCi Bellis.
Most of the material you keep adding is unsourced, so whether it is true or not, it cannot be verified which is one of Wikipedias princpal policies, while some of it is not from a WP:Neutral point of view with words like "accomplished", "prestigious", "stellar form", "swept aside" and " convincing fashion".

- Based on your edit history, I'm guessing you are interested in Patrick_M._Hughes. You may be WP:BOLD and remove the tags at Patrick_M._Hughes yourself if you feel the article has been improved to meet the concerns listed. If someone disagrees, they will revert your change, and then it can be discussed on the article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 19:41, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- However, if you are Patrick M. Hughes (as your username HPATM suggests), then you should certainly not remove them, as your Conflict of interest means that you are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly. If you are Patrick Hughes, please argue on the article's talk page why you think the tags are no longer appropriate - you can add {{edit request}} to your suggestion to get it noticed - and wait for an uninvolved editor to come along and decide if your request should be carried out. --ColinFine (talk) 22:13, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
