Akshaya Patra is the name of a Non-Governmental Organization in India which supplies school meals to underprivileged school children.

Ashaya Patra is a Non-Governmental Organization in India which supplies school meals to underprivileged school children. Formed in Bangalore in 2000, Ashaya Patra has grown rapidly. As of August 2006, Ashaya Patra provided mid-day meals to over 4,00,000 children in over 2000 government schools in 10 locations throughout India.


Origin of Name

The name of the origin is derived from a story narrated in the Mahabharata. The Pandavas, living in exile in the forest, received a pot, the Akshaya Patra from Lord Surya. This vessel would provide unlimited food each day until Draupadi had finished eating.
