Surprised to Be Dead

Template:Infobox Anime episode "Surprised to Be Dead" is the 1st episode of the anime, Yu Yu Hakusho. The Japanese version is also called "Surprised to Be Dead". This episode first aired on February 23, 2002.

Synopsis

Template:Spoiler The episode starts off with Yusuke Urameshi, the worst punk of Sarayashiki Junior High, sacrificing his life to save a little boy from an incoming car. He awakes floating in the air as a ghost. Trying to figure out what's going on, Yusuke thinks about what he did that day explaining how it was different because of the fact that he went to school that day. Keiko Yukimura, a girl that Yusuke likes but won't admit it, finds Yusuke hanging out on the roof of the school. Keiko scolds him for not going to class and not wearing the school uniform. Yusuke responds by looking up Keiko's skirt. Keiko then slaps him and heads back downstairs. Keiko's friends ask Keiko if she's scared of Yusuke and what people might say. Keiko tells them that that's what Yusuke wants them to think. Her friends tell her that they've heard rumors that when Yusuke whistles 2,000 men appear at his side. Keiko tells them that Yusuke doesn't have many friends and he can't whistle. Attention goes back to Yusuke as he's walking around the school. He overhears a kid telling his friend that he told someone that Yusuke was his cousin and took his wallet. The kid's friend asks him what he'll do if Yusuke finds out. The kid tells him that Yusuke is a block head and he'd probably believe it. Yusuke threatens to beat them up but before he can Mr. Iwimoto, a teacher that's out to get Yusuke, kicks Yusuke out of the school for the day. Before he can leave, Mr. Takanaka, the principle of Sarayashiki Junior High School, stops Yusuke to have a word with him but Yusuke gets away from him and heads home complaining.

Once home, his mother tells him if he's so mad and doesn't want to get scolded that he should get a job. Yusuke complains about being scolded then leaves. While walking, Yusuke's rival, Kazuma Kuwabara, shows up to fight him but Yusuke beats him down very easily. Yusuke then remembers that this is the time he meets the boy. The boy is playing with a ball and runs into Yusuke. After showing the kid some funny faces, Yusuke tells him to not play ball by the street. The boy continues playing anyway and kicks the ball in the street in front of an incoming car. Yusuke remembers jumping in the way of the car to save the boy and comes to the conclusion that he is dead. Botan, a pretty blue-haired girl that is the Grim Reaper, shows up and tells Yusuke that he can be brought back to life if he accepts an ordeal. Yusuke refuses saying that he liked being a ghost. Botan decides to give him some time to think about it. Yusuke goes to his funeral and sees how sad people are and decides to accept the ordeal thus ending the episode. Template:Anime Ep Nav

Trivia

• In the English Dub Keiko tells her friends that Yusuke can't whistle but after Yusuke beats up Kuwabara, Yusuke walks away whistling.
• The Japanese episode title and the English title are the same which is rare for an anime.
