The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad is an Institute of National Importance located in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India.The Institute has been dedicated to the cause of creating manpower for the emerging economy of India from the year 1926. The Institute made a new foray into the field of management education with the establishment of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management in the year 1977. In the beginning, the Department offered a M.Tech course in Industrial Engineering and Management. After a span of more than twenty years, the Department was reconstituted as the Department of Management Studies. A plethora of new courses were soon added to the portfolio of programmes offered by the Department. Currently, the Department admits students on the basis of the Common Admission Test (CAT).[1]

Programmes offered

Undergraduate

The Department runs minor courses for UG Students of other disciplines in the subjects of:

  1. Financial management
  2. Operations management
  3. Marketing management
  4. Human Resource management[2]

Postgraduate

The Department offers the following courses for PG Students:

  1. Master of Business Administration (MBA) (Duration: 2 years)
  2. Master of Technology in Industrial Engineering and Management (Duration: 2 years)
  3. Executive MBA (extended program) (Duration: 3 years)

The Department also offers Doctoral programmes for candidates.[3]

Laboratories

The Department has four laboratories:[4]

  • Human engineering laboratory
  • Work study laboratory
  • Systems laboratory
  • Psychology laboratory[5]

Industrial Interaction

The Department has a good amount of association with the Industry. It has taken part in consultancy projects of various organisations and has also offered Executive Development Programmes to several business houses and organisations. Some of the Industry partners/clients of the department include: The World Bank, CIMFR, BSNL, NCL, Coal India Limited, etcetera.[6]

Research activities

The Department has a large number of sponsored research projects funded by several agencies. Some of the organisations entrusting projects to the Department are AICTE, MHRD, Hindustan Zinc Limited, ICSSR, UGC, CMPDIL, World Bank, etcetera.[7]
