The Society of Daughters of Holland Dames

The Society of Daughters of Holland Dames - Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Families of New Netherland - was founded in New York City in May 1895 as an hereditary organization to preserve and promote the legacy of the seventeenth-century Dutch settlers of New Netherland. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and maintain genealogical and historical documents relating to the Dutch in America by encouraging excellence in related historical research.[1] The Society also has established durable commemorative memorials in lasting tribute to the early Dutch settlers.[2]

Another heredity organization known as The Holland Society of New York[3] originated The New Netherland Project which translates and publishes 17th Century records held by the New York State Archives. Complementing that initiative, The Society of Daughters of Holland Dames has worked with the New Netherland Institute (NNI) to facilitate the availability of online transcriptions and translations of all the original seventeenth-century New Netherland administrative records housed at the New York State Library and Archives.[4] The translation of these first founding documents has been an ongoing project of Dr. Charles T. Gehring at the NNI and has transformed an understanding of the impact of the Dutch on our country’s heritage. For example, these records were the basis for the Russell Shorto’s [5] book "Island at the Center of the World." In addition, the Society donated its Archives and other important objects to the New York Historical Society Museum & Library, enabling scholars and the public to study them.

Membership consists of female direct descendants of an ancestor who lived in New Netherland before or during 1675.
