The Third Congressional District of Maryland elects a representative to the United States House of Representatives every two years. The seat is currently represented by Ben Cardin (D), but he will not be seeking re-election to this position. Both of Maryland's current US Senators, Paul Sarbanes and Barbara Mikulski represented this district. Should Cardin win the Democratic Senate primary and be elected to the Senate, he would be the third consecutive Representative of this district to go onto the Senate. For more information, see Maryland congressional elections, 2006.
