On 19 December 2016 at about 20:00 local time, a truck ran through a Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin, Germany, killing at least nine people and injuring at least 50 more.[3][4] German police believe that this is probably a terrorist attack.[5] The truck drove 50–80 metres, crossing the walkway and destroying booths.[6] Local police stated that the vehicle came from the direction of Budapester Strasse before finally coming to rest in front of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.[7] The driver was reported to have fled towards the Berlin Zoological Garden.[6] The suspect, believed to be the driver, has been taken into custody.[8][9] Police said a second occupant of the truck died at the scene.[10] Islamic State reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.[11]

Vehicle

The vehicle involved was a black Scania articulated lorry. [9] The truck bore Polish number plates (GDA 08J5) and belonged to a Polish delivery company Usługi Transportowe Ariel Żurawski, based in Gdansk.[citation needed] The owner of the truck interviewed by Polish TV said that the original driver was his cousin, not a fanatic or a crazy person.[citation needed] They[who?] last contacted him[who?] between 15:00 and 16:00, when he[who?] reported that he got to the destination company in Berlin too late and he has to wait there for the unload until the next morning.[12]
