Bagan Datoh (alternate spelling: Bagan Datuk and Bagan Dato', Chinese: 峇眼拿督) is a town, a parliamentary constituency and a new administrative district in southwestern Perak, Malaysia. It is about 130 km (by car) from the state capital Ipoh and 46 km from Teluk Intan. Across the Bernam River is Sabak Bernam, Selangor.

History

In January 2016, Bagan Datoh was declared an autonomous sub-district (daerah kecil) of Perak after the approval from Sultan of Perak, Menteri Besar of Perak and the state secretary.[1] On 15 June 2016, Bagan Datoh was upgraded into a full district, detaching it from Hilir Perak (Teluk Intan). Teluk Intan however retains responsibility for the municipal works in the new district.[2] In August 2016, Sembilan Island was incorporated to Bagan Datoh District from Manjung District.[3]

On 29 December 2016, it was announced that Bagan Datoh will be renamed to Bagan Datuk starting 9 January 2017.[4]

Administrative divisions

Bagan Datoh District is divided into 4 mukims, which are:[5]

The main economic activity in Bagan Datoh is fishing. There are also, however, many coconut plantations nearby, visible along the road to Bagan Datoh from Teluk Intan.

There are also a few fishing villages scattered around Bagan Datoh, for example Sungai Tiang and Sungai Burong, and their corresponding seaside village Bagan Sungai Tiang and Bagan Sungai Burong. On the way from Teluk Intan there will be a few small township which are Hutan Melintang, Selekoh and Simpang Tiga. One popular spot for angling is Sungai Dulang, situated about 8 km from Bagan Datoh. It is famous for lobster fishing where an angler's night spent there could harvest up to 5 kilograms of lobsters.

Transportation

Highway 69 is the main ingress to Bagan Datoh town. KTM Intercity does not serve the area.

Politics

Bagan Datoh is represented in the Dewan Rakyat of the Malaysian Parliament by incumbent Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi from UMNO.

On the state level, Bagan Datoh provides two seats to the Perak State Legislative Assembly:

Rungkup is currently held by UMNO while Hutan Melintang falls to PKR.[6][7]
