Baddha padmasana

The Baddha Padmasana or Bounded Lotus Pose is a variation of the cross legged sitting meditative asana called Padmasana. Baddha means bounded in Sanskrit and, as the name suggests, this asana is a bounded form of Padmasana. This asana improves flexibility of the joints of the lower extremities, helps the circulation of legs, helps to correct postural deformities, and improves concentration.

Tha Asana

From the common sitting down on the floor (Indian Style, Cross-legged) position (asana), one foot is placed on top of the opposite thigh with its sole facing upward and heel close to the abdomen. The other foot is then lifted up slowly and placed on the opposite thigh in a symmetrical way. This is Padmasana.

One hand then reaches behind the back and catches hold of the same foot with the index and middle finger of the hand. This is then slowly done with the other hand. In the final position, the person doing the asana is constrained because of holding the feet with the hands coming from behind the back.

Effects

The range of shoulder movement is increased due to crossing of hands behind the back.

Precautions

It is generally not recommended for people with knee and ankle pain to attempt this asana.
