Joe Keery (born April 24, 1992) is an actor and musician. He is best known for his role as Steve Harrington in the American science-fiction horror TV series, Stranger Things.
Early life
Joe Keery grew up in Newburyport, Massachusetts where he attended Newburyport High School. He is the second of five children and grew up surrounded by sisters.[1] He began acting in high school, performing there initially at his sister's insistence. Keery went on to study at The Theater School at DePaul University and graduated in 2014.[2]
Career
After graduating from DePaul, Keery went to over a hundred auditions.[3] Before his breakout role in Stranger Things, Keery appeared in a KFC commercial, and had roles in Empire, and Chicago Fire.[2] His first appearance in a full-length film was in Stephen Cone's indie, Henry Gamble's Birthday Party.[2] Industry reports have confirmed that he will return to Stranger Things in Season 2 that will premiere in 2017.[4]
Keery is known to be a look alike of Ben Schwartz. To that effect, Michael Schur, creator and producer of Parks and Recreation, confirmed a fan theory that Jean-Ralphio Saperstein (of Parks and Recreation) is indeed the son of Keery's character Steve Harrington.
Music
Aside from acting, Keery is also a musician. He is a guitarist/vocalist [5] in Post Animal,[6] a garage and psych-rock band based out of Chicago. Their full-length album was released in October 2015.[7]
Previously, Keery released music under the name "Cool Cool Cool".[8]
