Dhital is a Nepalese surname. This name might have come from a combination of the words "Dhee" (excellent) and "Tal" (rhythm), meaning "a person with an excellent rhythm". Dhital's origin is most likely from Jumla, a northwestern district of Nepal, but people with the name are now scattered all over the country, including in Lamjung, Gorkha, Dang, Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchowk and Rupandehi.

The Dhital's gotra (lineage) is from Kaushik, also known as Viswamitra, a legendary sage of ancient Bharat Barsha (Anglicized to Indian subcontinent). There are Dhital with Gautam gotra as well.
