Folks, after eleven years, I have decided to "retire" from active Wikipedia editing. For the past couple of years, I have done little more than monitor my watchlist daily and revert some silliness. I no longer enjoy the process at this level and I'm usually so busy with other activities, such as cartography, that I can't devote any significant time to writing or improving articles. I will leave the remainder of my Talk page below as an archive. I have contributed a number of maps over the years. As an exception to my retired status, if any editor contacts me to report an error in one of my maps, I will consider updating it. Happy Anniversary

Today is the 11th anniversary of my first edit on Wikipedia. (No, I actually do not remember which article it was, but I made note of the date for my anniversary remembrances.) At one time I was extraordinarily busy on Wikipedia, spending at least a couple of hours every day, but nowadays I check my watchlist daily mostly to make sure people don't screw anything up. The reason is that, despite retiring from a full-time job in the computer business, I am now busier than ever as a cartographer, creating maps of Civil War battlefields for non-free publication. This is a skill that I learned in producing over 200 maps for Wikipedia articles, so my collaboration on Wikipedia has been very valuable, for my self-esteem if not my pocketbook. :-) If you would like to check out my current work, please visit http://www.cwmaps.com/. I look forward to having an untagged article again, but only if we can make the factual historical BLP material in this important article—about an historical contributor I admire—compliant with WP policies (WP:VERIFY, WP:OR). Hal, I'm sorry to hear you are retiring, but I completely understand, given you are no longer enjoying Wikipedia. Perhaps after some time away, you'll reconsider. We haven't had many interactions in the past, but I've seen many of your edits in the history of articles I've edited in my time here. Hal: I am a little behind in keeping up with developments but I trust you will still see my message. As you suggest, I will send an e-mail if I'd like a quick response in the future. I am sorry to see you bow out. You have made massive contributions to this project. Even your oversight is valuable, though I can understand your wish to create more content rather than just do oversight. There are still many American Civil War articles to write or improve and your writing is top notch. Nonetheless, your contributions to books are great as well and add much value for the readers. I have added several books to my library that include your good work. Best wishes. Hello sir, I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful maps. I'm reading Gettysburg: The Last Invasion by Robertson Dean and your maps have been a super resource. They clear up some questions, for example where was the union artillery on Houck's Rdige in relation to Devils Den and Rose Woods. I could never understand how they fired through the woods, westward, towards Longstreet's advance in the open field, but it looks like there was a small open gap between the woods the DD; and it appears the main assault up little round top was mainly from the south and not from the west which is how I had always understood it. Overall the level of detail with unit names and arrows fits the book perfectly, a great addition. March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.
