Rochester City Ballet is a contemporary ballet company in Rochester, New York.

History

The Rochester City Ballet was founded in 1987 by Timothy M. Draper, a year after he founded his dance school, the Timothy Draper Center for Dance Education. Draper unexpectedly passed away in 2003 of cardiac, shortly after the company announced plans to build a permanent headquarters on the grounds of the Harley School in Brighton, NY, for $1 million[1]. Jamey Leverett served as his Draper's replacement as Artistic Director. In 2015, Leverett announced she would be stepping down from her role as artistic director of the company, in order to devote her attention to being artistic director at the company's school, the Draper Center for Dance Education. David Palmer took her place as the Rochester City Ballet's Artistic Director[2].

Performances

While the Rochester City Ballet tends to adhere to a contemporary repertoire, they occasionally include classical ballets. Most notable is their annual production of the The Nutcracker, performed in conjunction with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra[3].

Draper Center for Dance Education

The Draper Center was founded in 1986 by Timothy M. Draper. The Rochester City Ballet company was founded a year later.
