Melanie Gillman is an American queer nonbinary cartoonist, illustrator, and lecturer living in Tulsa. Gillman uses the gender-neutral pronouns they/their/them. They are most known for their LGBT webcomic As the Crow Flies,[1] and they specialize in LGBTQ Young Adult comics.
Education
Melanie Gillman completed an MFA at the Centre for Cartoon Studies (CCS); they graduated in 2012.[2] They also have a BA from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Career
Since 2015, Gillman has taught Professional Practices at the California College of the Arts (CCA), and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Comics.[3] Gillman also teaches other courses at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and the Art Students' League of Denver.
Since 2017, she has been a writing fellow[4] at the Tulsa Artist Fellowship program.
Her comics have been published by Boom Studios,[5] Iron Circus Comics, Lion Forge Comics, Slate,[6] VICE,[7] PRISM Comics, Northwest Press, The Nib,[8] and others.
Bibliography
Gillman's graphic novel, Smbitten,[9] is a graphic novel about lesbians, swing-dancing, fancy hats, and vampires. Smbitten was Gillman's first graphic novel in coloured-pencil, and was a product of her Masters thesis at the Center for Cartoon Studies.[10]
As the Crow Flies,[11] a webcomic started in 2012 about a 13 year old queer girl of color who finds herself at an all-white Christian backpacking camp. The comic was nominated for a "Best Digital/ Webcomic" Eisner Award in 2014,[12] and for an Ignatz "Outstanding comic" award in 2016.[13]

Awards
Gillman was awarded a gold medal for "As the Crow Flies" by the Society of Illustrators.[15]
Comic cons
In 2013[16] and 2016,[17] they participated in the annual Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE).
In 2017,[18] they participated in the AnomalyCon in Colorado.
