Melanie Gillman
Melanie Gillman is an American queer nonbinary cartoonist, illustrator, and lecturer living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gillman's pronouns are singular they.[1] They are best known for their LGBT webcomic As the Crow Flies,[2] and they specialize in LGBTQ Young Adult comics.
Education
Melanie Gillman completed an MFA at the Centre for Cartoon Studies (CCS); they graduated in 2012.[3] They also have a BA from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Career
Gillman has taught Professional Practices at the California College of the Arts (CCA) since 2015, and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Comics.[4] Gillman also teaches other courses at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and the Art Students' League of Denver.
They have been a writing fellow at the Tulsa Artist Fellowship program since 2017.[5]
Their comics have been published by Boom Studios,[6] Iron Circus Comics, Lion Forge Comics, Slate,[7] VICE,[8] PRISM Comics, Northwest Press, and The Nib[9].
Bibliography
Gillman's graphic novel, Smbitten,[10] is a graphic novel about lesbians, swing-dancing, fancy hats, and vampires. Smbitten was Gillman's first graphic novel in coloured-pencil, and was a product of their Masters thesis at the Center for Cartoon Studies.[11]
As the Crow Flies[12] is a webcomic started in 2012 about a 13 year old queer girl of color who finds herself at an all-white Christian backpacking camp. The comic was nominated for a "Best Digital/ Webcomic" Eisner Award in 2014,[13] and for an Ignatz "Outstanding comic" award in 2016.[14]
The Other Side[15] is an anthology of queer paranormal romance comics published in 2016, of which Gillman is co-editor and contributor.
Gillman also worked on the Steven Universe comics series for Boom Studios in 2016.[citation needed]
Awards
Gillman was awarded a gold medal for As the Crow Flies by the Society of Illustrators.[16]
Comic cons
They participated in the annual Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) in 2013 and 2016.[17][18]
They participated in the AnomalyCon in Colorado in 2017.[19]
