The 1978 Sacramento State Hornets football team represented Sacramento State University[note 1] during the 1978 NCAA Division II football season.

Sacramento State competed in the Far Western Conference (FWC). The Hornets were led by first-year head coach Bob Mattos. They played home games at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. The team finished the season with a record of one win and nine losses (1–9, 1–4 FWC). Overall the team was outscored by its opponents 84–304 for the season, or an average score in the losses of 7–31.
