The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
- If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

My original file is based on visual observation, but I have since found actual measurements from SADC. However the math is confusing me, I can make the outer white section with corners in the proper radius, but I can't figure out the reduction in radius for the corners of the red section. Request: We currently have a series of icons to indicate the status/progress of WP:BRFAs, but they are hack-ish and not perfectly suited to the task.; Could we get remade in blue, with the top + being a checkmark, and the bottom + remaining a +?; Could we get remade with a green icon, like is?; Could we get remade with eyelashes (in the same shades of blue as the other icons), to make it clearer this is an eye, and not a planet/star, moon/planet?

Maybe it'd look better a bit lowered, but as far as I'm concerned, it looks good enough that I wouldn't have complained about the current look if you hadn't mentioned that it might look better slightly lowered. Apollo logo - automatic replacement in articles?

I looked through Commons:Top 200 logo images that should use vector graphics and the first one was the Apollo logo. So I recreated it in SVG. I tagged the PNG accordingly, but now someone has to replace the PNG with the new SVG in over 1000 articles spread over dozens of wikipedias. Is there any way to automate this? bug in the PNG renderer of mediawiki? or is my SVG invalid?

Request: Hey, it is me again. I am still improving on the SVG and wanted to start with the moon. If you go to the "File history", you'll see that e.g. https:/upwiki/wikipedia/commons/archive/0/00/20170308141914%21Apollo_program.svg has a much more detailed moon surface. However, when I uploaded this, the PNG preview automatically rendered by the wikimedia software showed one of the craters very much different from the others. I tried to find the problem, but, as far as I can see, the SVG is valid. Can someone who knows a lot about SVG and the PNG preview renderer take a look and help me with this? @Lommes:Hi I think the problem is that the moon craters in your SVG have a blur effect on their paths which don't appear until you zoom closer. For example if you zoom-in on your SVG version the blur effect on the craters render. If you remove the blur effect in your SVG then the PNG should render the detail correctly. @Tsange:Thank you very much for your answer. However, when I open the linked SVG ( https:/upwiki/wikipedia/commons/archive/0/00/20170308141914%21Apollo_program.svg ) in either Firefox or Chromium, the blur effect is displayed perfectly. Only the Wikipedia PNG renderer has difficulty displaying this, and only on one specific crater. I believe the blur effect helps showing the moon surface in a way that is closer to the Apollo patch graphic. --Lommes (talk) 14:46, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Lommes: I think I've found a fix. After playing around with the SVG's code I found that removing the transform matrix from the crater's paths (path8112-9-6 and path10771-5-6) the blur effect appears, not sure why this this though. Tsange ☯ Talk 14:37, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hue circle

Hue in 360 degrees

Article(s): (talkpage, to support choosing legend colors. A bit like in here).
Request: To explain picking a color set by picking hues, I'd like to use this hue-circle, modified. Please:; Keep the color circle, remove all π numbering (all black). Turn full red (0°) in top (12 o'clock). Add degree markers (clockface like) and numbers, e.g. for 0-90-180-270-360° or 0-40-80-120-...-360° (steps 40° preferred). Numbers not too small (no need to click larger to read numbers; for example the current π symbols are a bit too small. Put them on the outside?). Not sure: some wheels have 0° at 3 o'clock, as this one has. And working counterclockwise (upgoing degrees). Is that standard in color design? If so, then should we keep it?

To consider:

Do not overwrite (because of current use), but create new file.

For me svg vectorising is not needed, but you can do as you like or need.

S and V to be constant, further not relevant (as long as the hue colors are bright).

Simple illustration for Gaussian Correlation Conjecture

@נחי: Could you be more clear about the part you are interested in? If I understand correctly you want the image of the darts hitting the circle and rectangle, and you want the square with the Gaussians of the weight and heights on the side. Is that correct? I want to caution you, in that I believe the combination of the 3D graphic of the Gaussian with a graphic of darts hitting a circle may be eligible for copyright. Not a request, more of a bug report

Arms of Marquess of Lansdowne

Request: In the gallery above, the coat of arms is shown correctly (AFAIK, though the different field for the two red saltires is suspicious). But in the article Marquess of Lansdowne, where it appears in the infobox, the ermine leaks out of the shield and fills the bottom righthand corner of the enclosing rectangle. Also at ja:侯爵#侯爵家, where it appears in a table. I see this with both Chrome and Safari. I've no idea how I might go about fixing it, so I'm hoping that someone here knows. Done I'm certain that the issue has to do with the masks that were being used in the image. I'm don't what causes it, but the imaeg was not rendering correctly with any other svg displayer apart from inkscape. Regardless, I recreated a version that doesn't use any masks, and is more true to File:Petty-Fitzmaurice-crest.jpg. Let me know what you think. Auguel (talk) 05:17, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Auguel: in my opinion, it's a great improvement. The ermine no longer leaks out, the bends are aligned, both saltires have fields argent, and the thin black lines make it clear that there are distinct but adjacent ermine components. I wonder about the central crescent: you have made it smaller, but should it be there at all? It's not mentioned in the blazon at Marquess of Lansdowne. Traditionally a crescent is a mark of difference indicating a second son. My guess is that the crescent is not present in the arms of the Marquess, and the poorly-done version you have replaced was copied from the arms of a second son of a Marquess of Lansdowne. Like I said before I was basing myself on File:Petty-Fitzmaurice-crest.jpg rather than the original svg. Note that in the jpg there is a smaller but still present crescent in the center. I really don't have enough knowledge to judge whether it should be there, but if you still think it should be removed, I'm more than happy to remove it.
