Silk Test® is a test automation solution for functional and regression testing of web, mobile, rich-client, and enterprise applications. Silk Test® helps development teams, quality teams, and business analysts to deliver software in high quality. With Silk Test® you can record and replay tests across multiple platforms and devices, without the need to write any line of code, and you can integrate to the most commonly used IDEs for the more technical testers[1]. It was originally developed by Segue Software which was acquired by Borland in 2006. Borland was then acquired by Micro Focus International in 2009.

Silk Test® clients

Silk Test® provides interfaces for any tester, based on the individual skills and preferences:

  • Silk Test Workbench is a standalone client that enables business-focused people and testers to create tests without any coding experience required, using the visual testing interface. More advanced testing needs can be covered by the Visual Basic .NET scripting engine of Silk Test Workbench.
  • Silk4NET is a Visual Studio plug-in that supports creating and executing test scripts in any .NET based programming language, for example C# or VB.NET.
  • Silk4J is an Eclipse plug-in that supports creating and executing test scripts in Java.
  • Silk Test Classic is a standalone client that supports creating and executing test scripts in the domain-specific language 4Test.

Main features of Silk Test®

  • The Silk Test® client is an IDE for creating, maintaining, and executing tests.
  • The Silk Test® agent translates the script commands into GUI commands (User actions). These commands can be executed on the same machine as the client or on a remote machine.

Silk Test® identifies all windows and controls of the application under test (AUT) as objects and defines all of the properties and attributes of each window. Thus it supports an object-based implementation.

Silk Test® supports both recording and descriptive programming methods to identify and verify the elements in the AUT. It also identifies any mouse movements and keystrokes, enabling testing against custom objects in the AUT.

Silk Test® supports testing web applications, mobile web and mobile native applications, rich-client applications, and enterprise applications.

History of Silk Test®

  • 1993-1996: QA Partner (Segue).
  • 1996: QA Partner was renamed to Silk Test®.
  • 2006: Borland acquired Segue.
  • 2009: Micro Focus acquired Borland and the Quality Solutions (including the automation tool Test Partner) part of Compuware.
  • 2009: Introduction of Silk4J.
  • 2010: Introduction of Silk Test Workbench (the successor of Test Partner) and Silk4NET.
  • 2017: Introduction of Silk WebDriver[2], a free offering for recording and replaying Selenium scripts.
