History

Incepted in 1958 by Sri Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, the Sona Group of Institutions is situated in Salem which is a few hours drive from the southern metros and well connected by rail and road making it an ideally suited destination for technical education, training and research. The group has in its fold Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, regarded as India’s best polytechnic, and Sona College of Technology ranked among the top five private technical institutions in India.

It is only the vision and drive of Sri. Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar that has made Thiagarajar Polytechnic College what it is today. Started humbly in a building owned by Governor General of India, Sri Rajagopalachari, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College was inaugurated by President R. Venkataraman who also graced its silver jubilee celebrations. The crowning glory of its golden jubilee celebrations in 2010 was the distinguished presence of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam[2].

Sona’s Founder Chairman, Thiru M. S. Chockalingam Chettiar or Sona as he was addressed fondly by his friends and admirers established the college in 1997. And just like the Founder himself, Sona College of Technology is now a powerful ray of hope that guides youngsters towards fulfilling careers.

A hard working, simple, humble, affable, kind-hearted gentleman, a great textile wizard, a big giver…, it was this humble man’s dream and desire to give back to society and nurture the future generations which has culminated in a top ranking institution called Sona College of Technology. From that point on, there was no stopping the evolution and growth of what is now well known as the Sona Group of Institutions.

Sona is housed in a sprawling campus of 50 acres right in the heart of Salem city. Designed by India’s world renowned architects Mr.I.M.Kadri and his son Mr.Rahul Kadri, the Sona group’s buildings are architectural marvels. Being uniquely structured, the buildings have east-west facing windows for optimum ventilation. Sona is the first educational institution to get the Five Star rating by GRIHA for its Green Building. The-state-of-the-art laboratories, well-equipped workshops and other infrastructure facilities brand it the most sought after institution for engineering aspirants.

Valliappa, Vice-Chairmen Sri Chocko Vallippa and Sri Thyagu Valliappa, Sona strives to offer industry-and-career-oriented and value-added programmes that are beneficial to future generations. Their mission is to establish state-of-the-art facilities and resources required for continuing excellence, to encourage competent faculty and staff, and to motivate students to pursue higher education and also focus on their holistic development.

Sona renders practical learning opportunities through its modern laboratories which are linked to the 35 research and development centres that closely collaborate with ISRO, NIOT, DRDO, DST, Doshisha University Japan, and so on. It also offers a host of continuing education and non-formal courses to enhance the employability skills of the community. In particular, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSRI) wing of the college plays a vital role in offering need-based skill training that caters to the needs of the rural youth, especially women and differently-abled persons.

Sona’s main strength is its academic excellence which is achieved through its skilfully-crafted teaching -learning and student assessment processes.
