Proud Boys is a North American social-political conservative movement founded in 2016 by libertarian-conservative commentator Gavin McInnes, who describes it as a "pro-Western fraternal organization" for men who "refuse to apologize for creating the modern world."[1] They also subscribe to "no wanks" a rule which bans masturbation.[2] McInnes has also explicitly stated that no Nazis are allowed to join the group.[3]

The group takes its name from the showtune "Proud of Your Boy," a song introduced in the 2011 stage-show version of Disney's Aladdin.[4][5]

It was recently revealed that Gavin McInnes and Kyle Chapman (not to be confused with the NZ White nationalist of the same name) were teaming up to help the Proud Boys form their own paramilitary group called the “Fraternal Order of the Alt-Knights,” or FOAK. [6][7]

Events

Deploraball

On 19 January, 2017, McInnes, a British-Canadian-American citizen, stepped outside of the Deploraball, a pre-inauguration celebration he traveled to Washington, DC in the United States, for key members of the Trump campaign, including a number of members of the Proud Boys. McInnes engaged in fisticuffs with an antifa protester who was heckling him. He then proceeded to return back to the Deploraball red carpet, where he bragged to the Alex Jones/Infowars reporters about assaulting the protester, claiming that he was assaulted first, despite the video by WeAreChange reporter Luke Rudkowski showing that McInnes initiated the assault. [8][9]

New York University

In February 2017, McInnes arrived at New York University to make a speech, accompanied by a group of Proud Boys. Minor violence broke out between Proud Boys and antifa protesters, and the NYPD said that eleven people (from both sides) faced criminal charges. One Proud Boy encouraged others to fight the “faggots wearing black that won’t let us in,” and was later arrested for punching a reporter from DNAinfo.[10][11]

Berkeley march

A pro-Trump march in Berkeley on 4 March 2017 resulted in seven arrests and 10 injuries; though some attending were identified as Proud Boys, prior to the event McInnes disavowed any link to the march, tweeting: “#ProudBoys never agreed to be part of this march. I'm out”.[12][13]

Berkeley "Patriot’s Day" rally

On 15 April 2017, a "Patriot's Day" rally was organized in Berkeley by the Liberty Revival Alliance, which did not seek or receive a permit, and was attended by members of the Proud Boys.[14] Violence broke out between protestors and counter-protesters, with over 20 people arrested and 11 injured, while the local CBS News affiliate headlined Alt Right ‘Proud Boys’ Declare Victory In Berkeley Melee.[15]
