Newcastle Interchange is an under-construction transport interchange situated in the Newcastle suburb of Wickham, New South Wales. The interchange will house a railway station, serviced by NSW TrainLink and redeveloped from a station originally built in the 1930s, a light rail stop servicing as the western terminus of the Newcastle Light Rail, a bus stop to be serviced by Newcastle Transport, and a taxi rink.[1][2][3] The interchange was scheduled to open in late-2016, but a legal challenge over the line's closure delayed the commencement of construction. Construction commenced in May 2016 with a scheduled late-2017 completion date.[4]

Development

The design for the new interchange was released by Transport for New South Wales in July 2015.[5] The government purchased land adjacent to the transport interchange site in September 2015.[6] Originally to be named Wickham Transport Interchange, in December 2015 Transport for NSW lodged a proposal with the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales to have the station name changed to Newcastle Interchange.[7][8] This was confirmed in December 2016.[9][10]

Services

Wickham Transport Interchange will be serviced by NSW TrainLink Central Coast & Newcastle Line services to and from Sydney Central[11] and Hunter Line services to and from Maitland, Muswellbrook, Scone, Telarah and Dungog.[12]

Newcastle Light Rail services will operate through the Newcastle central business district to Pacific Park.[13][14][15][16]
