I found that there were a few dead links in the references, specifically links 80 and 85. I'm not going to delete them because I am using a computer with quite a few filters that may affect the page showing, but somebody should look into it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.125.38.209 (talk) 03:59, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removed ELs

I removed these ELs because I think they violate WP:EL, but several of them could possibly be used as inline references, so I am pasting them here. It might also be appropriate to submit some ofthem to the Open Directory Project to have a directory for her created, which could then be linked to from the EL section with Template:dmoz to avoid the EL section getting too long or arbitrary again.

Positions laundry list

It seems that decontextualizing Steinem's stances on various hot-button feminist issues does a disservice to readers. I propose that this section be divided temporally, so that, for example, her early work in the anti-pornography movement comes before her statements on same-sex marriage and that the former be more fleshed out since it is more fundamental to her thought than the marriage issue, which appears to be merely a statement of opinion on current events and not a significant area of her activism and writing. (This is just an illustrative example.) Any thoughts? --Danger (talk) 02:17, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good to me. Kaldari (talk) 07:26, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I like it the way it is; I think it's easier to follow. Maranjosie (talk) 18:24, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The way it is now says little about pornography. How are pictures of two people having, say, reciprocal oral sex, common in many porn mags, not an example of reciprocity.24.36.54.238 (talk) 22:57, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gloria Steinem and gay rights

I know Steinem has been interested in this issue for a long time, so we should probably include more than just the current blurb on gay marriage. I'll see if I can dig up some sources. Here's one to start with: "And on the question of lesbianism: we have to make lesbianism an honorable choice, because until it is, all women who don't conform will be held back by this word. But there's something much deeper—the politicization of sexuality—which says that all sex that doesn't take place inside patriarchal marriage and isn't directed toward having children is wrong. That's what the right wing is saying. They're very clear and we have to get clarity on our side. Our common cause comes from our mutual need to depoliticize sexuality, to free it." —"Let's Get Real about Feminism: The Backlash, the Myths, the Movement", Ms. Magazine, Volume IV, Number 2, 1993. Kaldari (talk) 04:46, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you can get some sources it would be great to include it. Maranjosie (talk) 18:24, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Transexualism

After reading through the original source cited for the Transexualism section, I have to say that our description of her views is a bit skewed. The quotes we use seem to be cherry picked to make it sound like she hates transexuals. Her actual views seem to be far more nuanced, and more a criticism of gender roles than transexuals. Two of the quotes weren't even accurate and one of them was completely misleading (as it was Steinem characterizing the views of others). I've corrected the most glaring problems, but the section still needs work to present a balanced picture of her views. Does anyone have any opinions about any of the existing wording? Would anyone object if I rewrite some of it? Also, does anyone know of more recent sources to use for this topic? The current material is mostly from 1977, which is pretty old. Considering how prolific a writer Steinem is, I'm sure she must have written something else on the topic more recently. Kaldari (talk) 05:34, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mothers Mental Illness and Patriarchy.

In a recent CBC radio interview, 2012, Gloria was asked about her relationship with her mother, to which she responded she had a close one.

The radio announcer, (Maria Tremonti) then presented her with the fact that her mother suffered from mental illness, and that she had, as a young girl been forced to look after her, she responded, "my mother's mental illness was patriarchy".

Perhaps the significance of Gloria's difficult early life in having to nurse a sick mother, and a father who left the family had a significant effect on Gloria's perspective of family. --174.5.39.86 (talk) 09:53, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps, but you'll have to get some sources before you include it. Maranjosie (talk) 18:24, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

GA reassessment

The lede is way too short for an article of this stature—it should be doing a whole lot more summary (especially for "good article" status) I am no longer watching this page—ping if you'd like a response czar 05:22, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Weird writing

The last paragraph at Early Life loos weird (I have since changed the first part).

  • "Steinem attended Waite High School in Toledo and Western High School in Washington, D.C." the latter of which she graduated from. I have changed this already.
  • "She then attended Smith College, an institution with which she continues to remain engaged, and from which she graduated Phi Beta Kappa." It is one thing to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa, but to say that she "graduated Phi Beta Kappa" sounds as if this how well she did, on par with "cum laude", "summa cum laude" etc.
