Welcome to the Africa-related regional notice board, a notice board for things particularly relevant to Wikipedians working on articles related to Africa. With the advent of WikiProject Africa, this page has transferred some of its subpages and will be dropping some of its project-like functions, instead serving as a place to inform people of what's happening with Africa-related content.

{{Portal|Traditional African religion}} has been created and can be viewed here. I have opened a new discussion at Talk:Traditional African religion#Portal for this topic requesting input from other editors as to which image we can use as a portal link before submitting the request to the portal team. For example if you add {{Portal|Nigeria}} to Nigerian related articles, the portal section would automatically show the Nigerian flag. I was thinking of using this Dogon or Tellem Nommo image. I like it because of what it symbolises: "hands held high symbolising prayer for rain" based on their traditional religion. If you guys have another image in mind, please share your thoughts on the article's talk page in order to keep discussions centralised. Abuja Declaration (1989) was deleted and it is still unclear why(There seems to be a sort of disambiguation). I have raised the issue at Deletion Review and would appreciate any help I can get in speeding up the process. I haven't been able to verify the references in the article (since I can't see it) but I think the article might need improvement. Please check it out and see how you could help out. Hi everyone, as you all may know Wikimedia is in the midst of its strategic planning process (see http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page for more information). As part of this process, I have been developing a fact base on Sub-Saharan African languages and their Wikipedias. The purpose of this fact base is to help the Wikimedia community understand the importance of these languages as they develop strategies to expand the reach of Wikimedia worldwide as well as to discuss the specific barriers to growth of these language projects. If any of you are also editors of any of the Sub-Saharan African language Wikipedias, I would really appreciate it if you took some time to look at what I've put together and make any changes or additions that you thought were appropriate. It would be especially great if anyone had some thoughts or ideas to add to the section on barriers to growth Sub-Saharan African language Wikipedias. I want to make sure that we have the most accurate information possible to inform the strategic plan as it is developed. The new 2008 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for Africa from the US State Department came out on 2009-02-25. Flickr User Hdptcar, a photographer in the CAR for the UN, has released a portion of his photos Creative Commons License Attribution. Such images are able to be uploaded to http://commons.wikimedia.org -- and a number of good ones have been, and are used in CAR related articles. If you're looking to illustrate current events, conflicts, health, education, towns, etc in the CAR or Africa generally, this is a wonderful source. For anyone working on the DRC: I stumbled upon Dragon Operations: Hostage Rescues in the Congo, 1964-1965. by Major Thomas P. Odom, Combat Studies Institute. U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. While the content may not be helpful, it is filled with (mostly) public domain images and maps. Need photos and maps (especially agriculture and climate related)? Try the USDA site: there are constant rainfall and climate map updates, and photos, including non-agriculture images. At the risk of mucking things up I've created Category:European colonisation in Africa, under which I'm creating national sub-cats (i.e. Category:French colonisation in Africa). I only chose "Colonisation" as opposed to "colonialism" because the top article was Colonisation. I posted something about this at the AfricaProject in July 2007, but never had the nerve to make a major category change, and I can use folks help. Hope this helps streamline things. Could folks (especially those with some academic background) take a look at Tuareg, notably the section on social structure and slavery. While I have much sympathy with Tuareg peoples, it seems monitored by folks with an interest in not discussing the Tuareg history of bonded communities, slave trade, or poor relations with their neighbors. I stumbled across a new (to me) licensing template, commons:Template:PD-UN, and have made a local copy at {{PD-UN}}. I'm slightly wary of the exact wording of the relevant UN legalese, but my understanding is that, as long as the relevant media is not also being used for an item the UN is selling, UN media is now free game. Assuming that the template isn't crushed by some legal argument that no one has mentioned thus far, this would obviously be a huge windfall, given the relative lack of media relating to Africa under GFDL-compatible licenses. - Banyan Tree 05:18, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just discovered a potentially valuable online source for information on Africa: Michigan State University hosts the African e-Journals project, a collection of bibliographical information on scholarly journals published in Africa, the complete texts of 11 such periodicals, & what appears to be a rich colectino of links to similar collections. Here are some tasks awaiting attention:

Many African countries have an official non-native language that isn't English. In many countries it's French. In addition, France, Italy, Greece, Spain, etc. are close to Northern Africa. So if you're looking at a poorly-written article and speak another language, consult the non-English article links to find additional information to mine for the English-language page.

Verify any CIA factbook information you cite. Smaller African countries are less frequently updated and often contain outdated information.

Lookout for articles on African topics that meet the criteria at Wikipedia:Good articles, not only to start pushing more articles towards Featured article status, but to help identify articles for inclusion in the Wikipedia 1.0 project. A list has been started on the talk for this page.

Matt Crypto has posted a "tit for tat" bounty for work on African cities and countries on the Reward board.

Tag countries and capital cities, significant topics and articles with {{WPCD}} on their Talk pages to ensure inclusion on a CD HTML version of Wikipedia. Good coverage is the discriminator.
