Song |
"Something Just like This" is a song by American electronic music duo The Chainsmokers and British rock band Coldplay.[2] It was released as the second single off The Chainsmokers' debut album Memories...Do Not Open on February 22, 2017 and as the only single off Coldplay's thirteenth extended play Kaleidoscope as the Tokyo Remix on June 23, 2017. The song was used as the theme for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. A live remix recorded in Tokyo of Coldplay's live version of the song was released on June 23, 2017.[3]
Background
In September 2016, the Chainsmokers shared two short clips of an upcoming song featuring vocals from Chris Martin.[4] On February 22, 2017, Spotify prematurely posted a banner ad at the top of the site's home page with a Listen Now button.[5] The song was also used during Miss USA 2017 swimsuit competition.
Composition
The electropop[6] song is written in the key of B minor and has a tempo of 103 beats per minute.[citation needed]
Music video
The lyric video was released on February 22, 2017 on the Chainsmokers' Vevo channel. It has received over 510 million views.[7] It was directed by James Zwadlo. A second music video was released for the Tokyo Remix on June 23, 2017. [8]
Chart performance
"Something Just Like This" debuted at number fifty-six on the Billboard Hot 100, but on its second week, the song soared to number five, becoming the Chainsmokers' third top five entry after "Don't Let Me Down" and "Closer". The song also became Coldplay's second top five entry after "Viva la Vida". Also, it became the Chainsmokers' fifth top 10 entry and Coldplay's fourth top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has since peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has sold 988,000 copies in the US as of July 2017.[9]
In the United Kingdom, "Something Just Like This" debuted at number thirty on February 24, 2017, reaching its number two peak position the following week. It spent nine consecutive weeks in the top 10.
Live performances
On February 22, 2017, Coldplay premiered "Something Just Like This" with the Chainsmokers on stage at the Brit Awards at The O2 Arena in London, England.[10] On March 5, 2017, they performed the song at the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards at The Forum in Inglewood, California.[11] Coldplay perform the song during their A Head Full of Dreams Tour since the March 31 show in Singapore.[12] On June 4, 2017, Coldplay performed "Something Just Like This" at the One Love Manchester benefit concert for the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing.[13]
