Sig figs

[edit]

I worry about the false precision displayed in the molar masses. We have 2-5 sig figs in {{Atomic mass}}, and end up with 6 in the examples found in the /doc page. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 19:56, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

E.g. for Tc2O7 (98 × 2 + 15.999 × 7 ), we get 307.807432 u. But the atomic mass of Technetium-98 isn't 98.000 u because of the mass defect, but rather 97.907216. Rounding to 3 decimals, that would be 307.807 u, off by 0.186 u. Correctly handling uncertainties is tricky and complex, but as it is now, this template will massively mislead people with false precision, and I wouldn't trust it past 1 decimal in most cases. Anything that requires more than 1 decimal of precision shouldn't rely on a template to calculate this. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 20:06, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You could have fixed that yourself much easier than bitching to me about it.
