Mastic roller hybrid
Mastic Roller Hybrid MRH is new asphalt technology that can be applied in the same roller compaction method as conventional Dense graded Asphalt that gives structural performance and Road-traffic safety of traditional Mastic asphalt (MA). The implications of this combination of technologies is a very important asphalt advance. roller compaction gives us the usual benefits of the ease and speed of paving and manufacturing of asphalt and the Mastic Asphalt (MA) gives us the benefits of increased resistance to Fatigue, cracking and the ability to produce water tight(zero void) pavement structures where desired that gives superior anti skid performance.
One of the benefits that Geo320 MRH brings to Mastic Asphalt is that the GEO320 MRH asphalt composition is made with only 4 – 5% bitumen content, which eliminates any possible bleeding (bitumen oozing on to the road surface) problems as may have been experienced in the past with conventional dense graded and (SMA) Stone mastic asphalt surfacings.
Since GEO320 Bitumen in it-self is slip resistant it provides increased road safety, it is important to differentiate between Stone mastic asphalt and Mastic asphalts, SMA has a different aggregate mix design with larger stone sizes and less fine end aggregates and relies on added cellulose and fibers to give it workability and performance. MRH on the other hand has a micro matrix structure all the way to maximum stone size of only 10mm, and it relies on the (interaction) and bonding physics between the interlocking micro angular particles and the binding agent (GEO320).
Mastic roller hybrid asphalt is more durable and is highly resistant to rutting, cracking (Fracture mechanics) and solvents and has high anti-skid characteristics. Note; that conventional Stone Mastic is prone to slippery surfaces caused by excess bitumen build up on the road surface Binder shift mainly due to “contractor or manufacturing error” (excess bitumen), and the slippery nature of petroleum based residue bitumen is also a contributing factor.
